I just brought SMAC today and so far it's looking pretty good. It's much more complex than civ2 and it will probably take me much longer to master it. Though it seems like it's going pretty slow. it may be because i have a p100, but is there anyway to speed up the game

Have you tried lowering the resolution? You sacrifice some graphics, but Firaxis already gave you a head start on doing that anyway.
