Having bought SMAC about a week ago, and being a very experienced Civ player, it has slowly dawned on me that SMAC, allthough offering a broader game-play, really doesnt offer any new challenges. The key to winning the game remains having a lot of bases/cities, thereby being able to achieve technological advantages.
Now, Im not saying that that makes the game any less fun to play, but basically, if you were good at Civ, you will be good at SMAC. That, all things considered, is slightly disappionting.

Just a thought...

I dissagree with you that having a lot of bases is the key to winning. I won a game as the UoP with only 7 bases with the other factions a lot larger than me but I built the right secret projects and base facilites and I still got a rate of a tech/3 turns.
I think SMAC does offer new challenges because the secret of winning is your ability to take advantage of your factions strengths which requires different strategies depending on the faction you chose.

I've only played a demo of SMAC, but on civ I would frequently play with an isolationists view, only building three cities. Even with so few cities, I still tended to dominate.
