I'm very curious about the multiplayer aspect of SMAC, however can you play Alpha centauri without using the CD after the NORMAL installation? I heard from other post that Us and Australia version of AC will not require CD, is that real?

Yeah, it is real. If you don't have the CD in, you just miss out on whatever you didn't install. So, if you didn't install the movies, you wouldn't get them, and so on, right on down the install ladder.
Don't ask me what is or isn't installed with each option though - I have no idea...
