I wish the dang AI wasn't so smart...
In the game that I'm currently playing, I am competing with the University for dominance. I(Gaians), am firm allies with the peacekeepers and Morganites, and the arch enemy of all the other factions.
After several turns of Vendetta against the University, Hive, Believers, and Spartans, I found that military activities were pretty light, so I went about my business as usual, building up my cities.
Then it happened. IN THE SAME TURN, the Hive,
Believers, AND spartans all invaded my island
from three different directions! Believers to the West, Spartans from the south, and the Hive in the east; I had half a dozen enemy units deposited on each coast, all attacking in complete coordination! A huge missile barage from the University came the turn after, and I had to fight a huge battle to keep the invaders at bay. Only my army of Demon Boil mind worms were able to repulse the enemy armies, and I emerged victorious...
barely.
The AI in this game is incredible. Firaxis, you guys rock!

If you want to experience this kind of carnage first hand, put your difficulty level
on Transcend; that's the level I was playing on when this happened. When on Transcend, all AI opponents get big cheats to production and
growth, so its no sweat for them to build the army of darkness required to kick your butt.
Add to that the fact that all of the factions
are in a perpetual bad mood, and the situation which I got in will become almost routine! It's one hell of a challenge, and fun too!
