I stink at SMAC. I cant seem to get my bases built up except for my original one. Any suggestions?

My build order for any new base is:
*1 defensive unit
*a former
*then recycling
*Then Childrens Creche
*Then another former (set all formers to "Shift+ctrl+A" Auto-Improve base)
*Finally I usually go in order and build all the building

Early in the game, the most important thing is to build up your population as fast as possible. To do this you need nutrients.
You should spend the extra time to scout the terrain and find squares that are rainy (+1 nutrient), have +1 nutrient specials (the leafy icon), or find the monsoon jungle (+1 nutrient each square).

Don't forget about minerals either. G. Luck.
