I already mentioned this in a reply, but think it warrants it's own thread and a source. You can read the press release from Electonic Arts at http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/990225/ca_electro_1.html I haven't yet seen the review from PC Gamer, although that issue should be here any day. -Brian

I read the rieview: Highs: "Extremely addictive gameplay and enormous depth" Lows: "Minor bugs here and there; fairly steep learning curve". They covered every point about the game and they a fairly complex guide with some new things I didn't know about. |

I thought CivII also got a 98%, or at least a 97%.. I got the magazine in the basement, somewhere... |

To: NotliketeaPC Gamer gave a 97% score to CivII, so if SMAC get 98% it'll be the top score I've ever seen. Think Half-Life received 97% last year and received the award for the best game in 1998. Personnaly I like to buy this magasine and it helps me to decide if i'll buy or not. I remember that 2 years ago i knew nothing about CivI and when i saw the review of CivII i decided to buy the game. I think that it was'nt a bad choice even if my girlfriend desagree(hehe). When they give a 90 + score on a game i really consider it as a potential buy. Depends of course the kind of game...... BDGolf

Yeah, only 2 games ever got 97%'s (96% was the top score for awhile), so SMAC getting 98% is excellent. |

Your US magazines are too generous. Not just to SMAC, but in general....think about it, 98% of perfection, for a game which is essentially a two-year rewrite of Civ II, i.e. very little originality.Don't get me wrong, I love SMAC, and is the game I've most enjoyed in the last twelve months, but were I reviewing it, I would still only award about 78% (UK) or 86% (US), since US mags get carried away, citing the poor graphics (go on, you can't deny that!), non-descript sound, and lack of originality. |
