I remember when Starcraft was first released. Everyone on the message boards kept on saying, this is TOO much like Warcraft 2, the same game but different units. Also, saying Starcraft sucked bad and it reminded them too much of War2 but was not near as fun. I also remember reading a bunch of posts from people saying they were going to bring it back to the store for a refund. Now, Starcraft IS one of the best RTS games out there and everyone is playing it on BNET. So what happened to the "Too much like Warcraft2" subject? This is similar to some of the posts I have read here about SMAC being too much like Civ2. I think as time goes by, SMAC will be "another classic" and it being like Civ2 will all be over with when everyone is playing SMAC more and more.

Prince, if you were here I could kiss you! (Thank your lucky stars you are not ) Exactly the point, most of our SMAC vets are saying. Civ2 was like Civ. Sooo? Civ was an amazing game! It deserves to spawn Civ-sequals! I mean, really! SMAC is furthur away from the Civ series than Red Alert is to Warcraft 2!Imran Siddiqui |

I agree completely. I didn't care for SC but for completely different reasons. People usually complain if a game is too new, they complain about the interface, and how this and that did it better, and how thye liked this better in the last game by the company. Then if you keep some things from the old interface they complain its just like the old game. Guess there will just always be people that aren't happy unless they can complain about something. |

Mooman: Having been interested in SMAC since it was first concieved, having posted at least 500 times in the old forums and as many in this one, as well as posting regularly in the Off-Topic thread just because you enjoy conversing with fellow SMACers. That should make you a SMAC "vet".Prince: Starcraft Sucked. SMAC Rules. Voil. Good point, though... |

They're the same game, but I think there's too much improvement in SMAC for it to be called CivII. Comparing CivII and SMAC is more like comparing Warcraft I with Starcraft - the jump in technology and gameplay is just so big. And this is obvious from the first time you play the game, too, whereas Starcraft had a great deal of 'hidden depth' about it, which took time to properly explore. |

It seems hat there are a certain group of gamers who rate games by playing for five minutes then screaming "this game is like the original" true story: I let my friend borrow SMAC. The next day I ask how was the game, he replies "exactly like Civilization II" I asked. "how much did you play it for?" "Five minutes" he replied. I tend to ignore what anybody says about the game after the week of the release and you should do the samething too. |
