posted 02-25-99 09:06 AM ET Is it just my bad luck or is there a tendency for the starting positions to be clustered, even on a large map. I get it every time. Last time I couldn't even build a second city on a little island without crossing Miriam's border. Is there an option to place starting positions randomly?

I have run into that also. Pick a giant world, with 70-90% ocean, (which creats several continents) and i have to start with 2 or 3 factions on the same tiny island. Happens to me 3 outta 4 games. and out of those, i get a GOOD landing spot 25% of the time (landmarks near by). this is on librarian level (where all things are suppose to be equal)
and yea, i could create a scenario and fix the crowding problem, but then i would know where everyone is at (I like the hunt).

That's definately bad luck, I never have that problem. However, it can also be a blessing. In the games with tiny map, I always send 1 or 2 of my guys out early to attack Colony pods and formers. That keeps those factions in size while you expand. And then ask them to surrender when you are at least five times larger.
