I've enjoyed countless hours of the game until my last campaign, where it takes 10+ minutes for the mindworms to do their number on my bases. Come on isn't it a bit ridiculous to be attacked by ~20 mindworms at each base, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... I'm sure you get the point. I finally did the three finger salute because I got so tired of waiting! Funny how it wasn't happening to the AI players too, I think they got hit with 2 or 3 at a time, maybe. Mindworms add to the game but there is a limit!

If you have read the back of the manual, you would know that holding "shift" (either one) will make the comp speed his/her units. In this case if there are 20 Mw's and they arrack hold down shift and the combat will go quicker. (This applies to when the comp is in his "turn")

There are also preferences you can set to hurry up CP (and Planet) movement as well as your own. You can also un-animate combat and movement of your own units by setting the right preference. HTH

That's good to know but makes no difference when there's 20 Mindworms that just *materialize* out of the ocean and fungus and begin to attack five bases all at once. Didn't I have a patrol in that area??? Guess not.

No thanks, I'll leave the manual reading to others!

That's one of the reasons I really LIKED SMAC--the unexpected nature of endgame.

In CIV, once you were off and running ahead of the pack, you pretty much had the game in hand. It was just a matter of going through the motions. In SMAC, I was playing toward Transcendance, my enemies were lagging quite far behind me Overall, and I was expecting that I'd wrap up a pleasant game in about 10-15 minutes and head off to bed.

Nope. Imagine my surprise when Planet Herself decided to jump up and down on me after I built Voice of Planet. Suddenly, the game was INTERESTING again! My cities were getting slaughtered! Death by the millions!! Oh, the Humanity!!!

I threw my resources into Transcendance and bulled my way through. It wasn't a graceful victory, but it worked. But, for a while, I was wondering if my city with Transcendance wouldn't be gobbled before it finished its work.

So I think this was a great event. Unfortunately, Planet can't get me that way twice ever again. Wish it were possible to someone have different social/personality agendas for the Planet personality as well as all the others.

Oh, well, maybe in SMAC II...
