I find it annoying that I cannot minimize the smac screen without exiting (as in civ2) when I need to do other things on my computer, because it takes over the full screen. Has anyone found a way around this? If not, I would call that a user-unfriendly bug!

Not a bug really 'cause its working as intended, but it is a design limitation. And no you can't do it. Agreed, I'd like it if you could but I can live with it. You can Alt+Tab to task switch but you'll still be in SMAC's forced graphics mode.
