Wow, I just saw the most interesting thing on TV tonight. It was a science show called the Nature of Things on Canada's national network CBC that was on the topic of colonizing Alpha Centauri and the science behind getting there and settling it. The episode was called "Escape from Earth" and it was eerie in how topical it was considering that I just bought SMAC last week and have been following the "Realistically --> Humanity --> AC --> 2100AD blahblah..." thread. They interviewed a lot of scientists, from astronomers, physicists, and biologists to get the latest scoop on how a mission to Alpha Centauri would go down. Absolutely fascinating. There was a discussion about using a Ramjet scoop for the propulsion; growing crops to feed the crew; why freezing people was not likely; problems of living in a ship for fifteen years (that's right -- they set an ETA from blast off) etc.etc. Did anyone but me see it? You guys at Firaxis have got to get your hands on that program -- a trip to Alpha Centauri seemed, not only possible, but entirely feasible.
If anyone (I guess Canadians or lucky satellite owners) saw the program I'd love to hear your feedback on it. I'd also direct anyone who might have taped it to email me.
If I can find out if it will be repeated I'll inform this forum! Wow, it was just so eerie to see the recreatd scenes of a ship travelling to AC...
