Well, I started on a random world and (still fairly early into the game) really started to pull away from the pack when...You know all those neat geographical landmarks like Uranium Flats that do special things when you build bases in them? Well they appear in random worlds, too, which is really cool. And apparently the Crater didn't generate on this world because an asteroid landed RIGHT ON TOP OF ONE OF MY BASES and created it. (OK, this was actually kind of cool. Now I need to rebuild.) All in all, I'm very, very impressed with the immense depth of this game. Thanks, Firaxis.

Yea those falling asteroids are great... I especially love the part where Bruce Willis lands on it and blows it up.... Oh wait.. or was that a Planet Buster? |

According to the stragtegy guide I just bought, this is a random event. It happens only if your faction is in first place and more than 75 turns have passed. |

Wow! That is a really cool random event! What are all the events, btw?Asteroid Plague Power Surge Hail Crop Failure ... Antiam

Is there a random event that destroys all the orbital satellites?I've read some mention of this in this forum but apparently no one yet has seen this... |

I think an asteroid hitting Nessus wipes out the mining stations and a solar flare wipes out the powersats and defense pods. Thats all I recall. |

I don't know if it's considered a random event, but last night, as Gaians, I had built up a healthy energy reserve (>3000)in 2270 or so and the Stock Market crashed, reducing my reserves to under 900. :{

I had the Nessus asteroid once...That was VERY annoying. I had about 12 orbitals...ALL of them got wiped out all at once by the asteroid impact on Nessus. My economy, industry, and my nutrients all became problematic SUDDENLY. I think the Nessus impact (after that experience) is just about the worst calamity in the game if you have lots of orbiters (since they take LOTS of resources to build and they're worth SO MUCH). |

Cheer up, at least the game is unrealistic enough (yes, I was lurking on that topic, sheesh) to not require you to build the space elevator on the equator.... and not have a random event that hits the tether up in orbit and causes the elevator to wrap itself around planet. ....or has that happened to anyone yet? |

I see you've read Red Mars too...

Other events:Industrial collapse (-1 minerals per square for base) Industrial boom? (+1 minerals for base) Solar Flare? (wipes out all communication - allows atrocities to be committed without diplomatic sanctions - I love this one...) |

I've had the solar flare event that wipes out all the orbital defense pods and energy transmitters. It could have been problematic if there was anyone else up there with me but I was the undisputed ruler of the sky at that time |

Actually, I haven't read Red Mars. I just have a good idea of what a space elevator can do disaster-wise. Although an attack from the ground severing the cable would fling it off into space.(Plus a few RPGs have space elevators and the possible damage a disaster can cause was one of the topics.) |

The Vrap around equator disaster is extremely unlikely because it requires no-brain engineers to be in charge of a project of that magnitude. The way to build a space elevator is to start with a 1000 km high tower, fasten the tether to that and mine it in appropriate places. Any disasters would still be pretty bad of course, but not wrap around the equator bad. |
