I started experimenting with unit designs later in the game and discovered a couple of interesting things. You can create flying formers and colony pods. Flying formers can improve land and sea squares. Flying colony pods can only start a base on land squares. This seems slightly inconsistent to me. Flying units should be able to improve and colonize sea squares or not be able to do either. I agree that a reasonable argument can be made for the current limitations but would prefer it was otherwise.

Actually, if you think about it how can an aircraft land in the ocean and establish a base? I can understand how it can do it on the land, if its some sort of harrier type aircraft then it might be able to set down on the ground like a helicopter.

I'll have to try the flying formers...that's a neat idea.

Late in the game, I produce drop colony pods. They still can't make ocean bases, but you can sure get them into position a lot faster <g>, and the damage from the drop doesn't really matter much.

A sea plane with floats instead of wheels comes to mind. Or maybe somebody has pulled out Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose design up on Alpha Centauri.

Prince, it seems logical to me that if a flying unit can plant a kelp forest or build a tidal harness that it could also start a base.

Has anyone tried building Flying Amphibious Colony Craft? I wonder if these Flying Colony craft could build sea bases if they had the "Amphibious Pods" special Add-on.

I use the Flying Colonizers too, they are particularly useful for snapping up islands when you are trying to control the area between you and another race, particularly a friendly one. If you get there first, they respect your turf, if you don't, you have to respect theirs, so getting there first is important!

So.. anyone tried Airborne Marine Drop Colony Pods?
