Confirm odds before attacking???

I think if the number on the left is higher its good for me and the bigger the difference the better??? Is the odds an emulator of just overall victory or the odds of winning one combat round..do i add them together and use the portion on the left as my odds compared to the right...just a little confused here as you can see..any help would be appreciated...thanx (boy do I feel stupid!!) |

The odds before attacking give you the ratio between the attacker's attack value on the left and the defender's defence value on the right, after all the modifiers for terrain, morale, etc. I don't know the formula for winning/losing a combat round though, nor how much damage is done each way (you take damage even when you win every round sometimes).
