Is there any way to totally eliminate the fungus from the game?

Yep. Build lots of fungicidal super formers.

I was wondering, is it possible for fungus/worms to grow from an area where there's no fungus? For example, if I were to purge an entire continent of fungus, would that mean that no new fungus would ever grow there on that continent ever again, and the only mindworms would come from overseas Isles? To carry it further, is it possible to destroy all the fungus on Planet?

Actually, Mindworms can appear ANYWHERE. In the Datalinks it merely says they have a much higher chance of appearing in Xenofungus, but that is not their only option.

You can eliminate all the Xenofungus on Planet. An easier way, however, is to build bases in large Xenofungal areas, give the base to another player who you want to get rid of, and then launch Singularity Planet Busters at all of the cities. Sure, Planet would get majorly pissed off, but now that all the fungus is gone, what can it do?

I'm not sure, but I believe fungus will come back eventually just from fungal blooms.
