I'ave try Alpha Centuari for a few day and find that it has a lot in common with Civilization (especially if you have the Fantasy kit). The only different is the time period and the ability to create you own unit. Is this all that different?
I really mad about this. Anybody please tell me the feature that should make this game the best game of the year..

lemme see...

Advanced Diplomacy Engine
you can now stack your units with your allies, demand techs, ask for bases to be turned over to you without bloodshed, ask for loans, etc.

Unit Design
you can design your own units

Atrocities
more variation in atrocities, such as destroying and razing entire cities at the touch of a key, nerve gasses, no unhappiness...

Weather engine
altering terrain will cause your squares to be more productive or less, depending on how high it is, where it is, etc.

Ecology Engine
terraforming with reckless abandon will cause the planet to fight back...destroying some of the things you've built, etc.

Barbarians/Mindworms
they actually do more damage and pose a grave risk to you

Different Factions
instead of several different civilizations with equal benefits, there are several different factions, with different demeanors, different benefits, different weaknesses...

UN Council
you can actually communicate with the entire planet and have decisions that affect the entire world and planet- instead of just inciting a few wars, you can raise/lower the sea level...

Pseudo-3d engine
you have terrain that goes up and down...you can see units attacking, because you have them turn to face the enemy and then shooting weapons...

Fog of war
sneak attacks work much better now, since they can't see your massive troop movements...and they know that they can't see some areas.

borders
determines actual territorial areas, shows them on screen.

need i go on?

btw...it should be somewhat similar to civilization anyway...

same genre, same creators, same gaming style...

other features:

multiplayer automatically included, with a Battle.net system already being put up.

Social Engineering, which allows you to actually change some of how your government works...not just six types, but now you can have up to 64 combinations or so, each with their benefits and weaknesses

more specialist types, which change with your tech level, giving different bonuses.

xenofungus, which has no analogue to civ...they're just something put there to make it harder.

landmarks, most of which confer special bonuses other than what usually is there (Pholus Ridge = +1 energy, Uranium flats=+1 Energy)

At it's very core, Alpha Centauri is very Civ-like but from there, they are two very different games. While there are only a few obvious, slap-you-in-the-face changes, such as design your own units, sea bases, and the story/environment of the game, there are tons of subtle differences that make this game rock. Incredible diplomatic AI, for one. Seven factions with their own strengths and weaknesses corresponding to their different personas and agendas, for another. The planet itself...the 3D-terrain actually affects your city and you can terraform it to your own wishes or use it against your own wishes. The borders are not only clearly defined, but are much more useful in diplomatic relationships. Keep playing the game and I think you will agree. In my opinion, they took the best parts of Civilization 2, fixed the problems, and added new, useful, engrossing play features to create a really great game that will probably be the game that finally pushes Civ2 off the top of my favorite games list.

Obviously, you have either played a minute of the full version or you have played the demo. The game is a much-more-adveanced-civ. It is a basically a civ game but, way way way way way way way...better. I urge you to play more or buy the game.

I have the game and it kicks ass. The comp is smarter than in civ2. The UoP (University of Planet) agreed to have a truce with me. Then they realized he was much more powerful (he had 12-6 with fusion reactor, I only had 8-4 units with fusion).

Buy the game!
