I hadn't changed anything with the game after I installed it, I installed the patch just now, and I don't hear any sound when the game begins. When the intro movie begins I hear sound, but once I go to the main menu it's dead silence. The audio options in the menu are all still on. Only thing I can think of is a new bug with the new sound.dll, possibly relating to eax enabling ? I even went into the .ini file and set the line 'eax=1' to '0', still not working.HELP! I want my sound!

Need a little more to help you. What's your sound card? Try rebooting and then run the game again. Make sure that sound.dll is present and correctly named. Unless you have a EAX sound card (Like the Creative Labs Sound Blaster LIVE!), eax isn't going to do much for you.jkm firaxis games |

It's a Crystal Fusion sound card, came with the computer. I've never had any problems with it with any other games. I rebooted the computer too and tried it and it still didn't work. HELP |

So it worked fine before the patch, and is off since. Uninstall the game and reinstall both it and the patch. Ensure that the A/V volumes are up and on. Also, look for any "!" in DXDiag.exe, and if so, D/L and install DirectX 6.1 (www.microsoft.com/directx). Is this a Laptop by any chance?jkm firaxis games |

It's no a laptop. I reinstalled the game, the patch, and downloaded and installed DX6.1. While installing DX it detected current drivers for my sound card it didn't recognize and recommended not to install over these, so I didn't. I started the game and still no sound after the intro movie. However I looked in the .ini file once more and decided to change the line 'ds3d=1' to '0' and that worked, I could hear sound again, so my sound card must have some issue with DirectSound 3D or whatever that is. Just thought you'd want to know. |

I've had the same problem too! Installed the patch, and then most of the sounds don't work. I can hear the little sounds for clicking on a button, but no voiceovers or battlesounds or music. I reinstalled off the CD and then it works fine. Installed the patch again and again, no sounds. (I did reboot the machine to see if that would help)I've got a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop, using DX 6.0. If you need more info, let me know! |

Try the ds3d=0 option in the alpha centauri.ini file (and eax=0 too if it's set to one). The way those hardware accelerated 3D cards work is radically different from non, so make sure it's detecting your HW correctly.jkm firaxis games |

I made the changes you suggested and now it works fine! Thanks! Wow, I was surprised that you would still be in the office at 11pm Eastern... Excellent enhancements in the patch and the units do move much faster now. Thanks again, and now to get back to playing! -Griff |

Jeff: just to add my voice, I'm having the same problem. I also have a Dell with the Crystal Fusion motherboard sound chip. The sound worked perfectly before the patch. After installation I get sound in the movies, but nothing else. Checked a/v settings all "on", and system volume is up high. I get no sound, not even clicks. Haven't reinstalled, but sounds like that won't help. I'll monkey with the settings listed in this thread, but if Brian could fix this in next patch I'd appreciate.Box is a non-laptop, Dell PII 400Mhz. Sound is the Crystal, running through boosted Altec USB speakers. The rest of the patch features seem fine (just started a 256x256 map for grins.) So, I'll try to fix, but there's a bunch of us Dell owners out here. Gonna be a problem for everybody with a box in the last year who didn't pop for the Turtle soundcard and went cheap. Snoman |

Sounds like the autodetect is backfiring a little. First-stab and all. Manually disable the hardware DS3D and EAX settings to 0 in the alpha centauri.ini.I admit, I'm telecommuting. But I can completely sympathize with someone who wants to play a game that doesn't work. Plus, quite honestly, this game rocks.. jkm firaxis games |

Thanks for your timely help, Jeff. I'm also a Dell owner experiencing the sound problem after installing the patch. And I did pop for the Turtle Beach card. Your work-around worked brilliantly.--Lee |
