OK, here is the place to vote on your favorite Secret Project Movie. (If you want to see them all, go to the Movies folder on the CD and drag-n-drop each movie onto Playuv15.exe)

Vote for the coolest, funniest, sickest, whatever...

My votes:

Funniest - Network Backbone
Coolest - Hunter Seeker Algorithm
Lamest - Theory Of Everything

What are your votes?

I think I'll wait until I've actually built the projects in the game before I go looking at the movie files outside the game. Hmmm... I could be waiting a long time; I've only seen the Human Genome Project movie so far. :-)

Haven't seen them all but I agree that the Hunter Seeker Algorithm is cool. I also like the human genome project and thought that the Longevity Vaccine is funny where you see on Morgan's network that exchange between the Peacekeeper and CEO figure.

The absolutely best movie is The Network Backbone just because of the quote from Morgan through it. Reminded me of Bill Gates...

I'd have to say the Dream Twister was pretty cool... maybe not THE best, but certainly one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a game in some time... I did find the Hunter-Seeker Algorithm to be cool, too, as well as one of the best secret projects in the game... I imagine that's the one everyone will be scrambling for in mp...

It's gotta be the Network Backbone. The play on the Micro$oft "Where do you want to go today?" graphics, the commments like "We're making such quality software, no one really wants to compete" are simply fabulous. I was seriously ROTFL.

Seen them all now and have to add network backbone to my list as I have to add Self Aware Colony. Backbone is amusing like Longavity and the Self Aware Colony is moving and scary and that was depected real well.

I'd have to say the strangest so far, that I've seen, was for the cloning thing (ugh, can't remember the name). Where they are going through the little chicks, and tossing them down a hole.

Very odd, that one was.

Here are the ones that stand out for me:

Network Backbone (see above -- Microsoft ribbing...)

Clinical Immortality -- pretty disturbing in its implications

Dream Twister -- whoa, I was SCARED!

The Supercollider -- just a well scripted little movie with my favourite Einstein quote

and finally...

The Chicken Breeder movie (yeah I can't remember it either) -- I will NEVER eat KFC again...

hehe good poll.

Of the ones I've seen, the self-aware colony was the most memorable. Very sinister. So was the dream twister. I thought the space elevator movie was pretty good; very dramatic. No one seems to have mentioned it, but I think the weather paradigm is quite good as well.

Well, The network backbone is THE funniest movie by far. I fell off my chair at Morgan doing a back flip. "Where do you want your node today?" But, the limerick in the Cyborg Factory is really funny too...

Kyle: Do yourself a big favor. Go rent 'Baraka' one night. I have no idea how it would be classified at your local video store, but ask them if they have it. (Or even better, see if any of your local 'artsy-fartsy' second run theatres are playing it...)

A lot of the footage in the wonders movies I have seen is borrowed from Baraka. (ie: the chickens). The film has no dialog or plot, it is just scenery and film put to music, but it has got to be one of the wickedest movies I have ever seen.

(Gotta love the 'hot-tubbing snow monkeys'...=)

The "chicken" one is Cloning Vats, I do believe.

I'd say my favorite is Network Backbone, too. It's just too funny! Longevity's good too.

Self-Aware Colony is my vote for scariest...I'm almost surprised there isn't a random event for the owner of that one in which an occasional SAC gets out of control and destroys a point or two of population before someone shuts it down. <eg>

Some good food for thought in many of these. Who SAYS you can't sell a game that has a message (or a few dozen...and let's not forget the quotes you get when you first build a given type of base facility!)?

I would have to say that the movie for The Self Aware Colony was haunting, elegant and subtle. It is by far my favorite special project movie, followed closely by The Network Backbone and The Dream Twister.

I like all the movies, however, I was dissapointed that they play in this tiny little window. I feel like I'm playing the 7th guest or something! Hasn't technology advanced a little bit more so that the movies play full-screen? Interlace the movies, make 'em widescreen, or something. Isn't this the reason why computers come with cd-roms that are 40x speed??

hey Eddo:

You're probably playing on a laptop. Many laptops can't handle the resolution switch that is supposed to happen when the movies play. On a normal desktop system, the screen will (or should) switch resolutions so that the movies play almost full screen.

I saw only two movies, the weather paradigm, and the virtual world. I didn't like them much. There is too much talk in them. With the Civ II movies it was just film and music. I loved the hanging gardens, marco polo, the crusade, adam smith, manhattan project. Still, maybe the others are better. Very curious for the network node movie, which is BTW a pretty useless project. Good thing that they only show movies when you build projects yourself, a.o.t. Civ II.

What about favorite tech/base facilities voice-overs. Mine are: children creche (Santiago) and of course the network node. Tech, mmm, don't know. Don't know the advanced techs well. Like the Miriam techs a lot (High Energy Chemistry).

ThRiLL posted 02-17-99 02:27 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for ThRiLL
Yeah eddo... The technology limitation isn't on how big of a window we can get to play smoothly, how we fit it all on one CD. I don't know about you, but after I build Hunter Seeker as the UoP (WOO YEAH! ) I dont want to have to insert disc 4... =)

And wow..Now that I've seen more wonders movies, I add to my previous message; That's a LOT of footage from Baraka! I'm not complaining, it's been done well. Did Firaxis have to pay royalties for the usage?

Again; if you haven't seen Baraka, you have to. The old crazy tribal guy rules.

Hey ThRiLL:

We were able to license footage from Baraka (i.e. we paid fees for it), as well as from some other places. We love Baraka...it contains amazingly high quality footage and is well worth a viewing. There just aren't many movies quite like it.

I'm a big fan of the space elevator. I love the elegant simplicity of the thread leading to the elevator itself. The self-aware colony is kind of cool, though.

Guess I'm just a minimalist at heart.

I like the hunter-seeker algorithm the best, but the self-aware colony seems to be the one that is the most accurate description of the way america is becoming. Also, about the Cyborg Factory, that footage was taken from the 3D Studio MAX demo CD.

I have got to say, any movie with the Morgans in it is good, and any movie with the believers in it is lame, that about sums it up.
Seely posted 02-17-99 04:39 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Seely  Click Here to Email Seely
It doesn't seem like there are any movies with the Believers. Only Miriam's voiceover, with unrelated pictures. Most of the other secret projects have links to some factions, but there aren't any for the Believers really. At least, I can't think of any. Someone want to jog my memory?
Also, I didn't think the Self-Aware colony was that impressive. Dream Twister was much more disturbing, as well as the Cloning Vats.
And I'm sure no one else did, but I rather enjoyed The Theory of Everything. Also, the Maritime Control Center was really beautiful. I liked the underwater scenes, and the cool transition at the beginning.
The Citizens' Defense Force was also very well done-- the mural depicting mind-worm attacks was really cool. It didn't even seem out of place in that it was describing a futuristic society, somewhere, they still draw pictures by hand. It made me think that that might be a Believer piece of work, despite Deidre's voiceover-- seems like Christians made tapestries with that style of artwork frequently during the middle ages.

Mike Ely -

No, I'm not playing on a laptop. Playing with a Intel i740 and I have a Voodoo 1 in my system if that affects anything. Maybe I'm the only one with this problem, but my movies are tiny!

When it plays a movie, I notice that the screen does switch resolutions, but the movie takes up less than half of the screen real estate.

Is that the way it's supposed to be???

yeah.. I'd say about half. I run ona 17" monitor at 1024x720, and I'd say I have about a 3" border around the viewing area for movies. It's better than I would've expected... (and it's better than the ones in civ II.. =)

Oh, and I think someone mentioned a little ways up something about favourite quote from just regular tech? Miriam's 'Controlled Singularity' words:

Some would ask, how could a perfect God create a universe filled with so much that is evil. They have missed a greater conundrum: why would a perfect God create a universe at all?

Two Questions:
What was that statue in the Self-Aware Colony anyways?
And are chickens really treated as badly as shown in the Cloning Vats?

Favorites: Self-Aware Colony, SuperCollider, Dream Twister, Space Elevator.
If found the shot of the twin suns and the city of Maratime Control Center quite beautiful. The Longevity Vaccine and the Network Backbone are funny. What I didn't like was the Telepathic Matrix. A couple people standing on a spire in a Gaian city really isn't that great. I still can't see how the Dancing Baby comes into the Cyborg Factory......

Bah.

All of this has missed some of the really cool movies (although I admit that the Hunter-Seeker Algorithm is a really great movie, not to mention one of THE most valuable projects).

Best movie:

The Ascetic Virtues

I'm a peacekeeper (as EVERYONE on the forums the past few months should know), no hivester, but I LOVE that movie.

Other cool movies (on my list, keeping in mind that I'm a social science major and a humanist):

Cool in Descending Order:

Hunter-Seeker Algorithm
Human Genome Project
Network Backbone (yes, the whole Bill Gates thing was rather humorous)
Voice of Planet
Ascent to Transcendence
Theory of Everything
Planetary Datalinks
Command Nexus

Intellecutally Scary movies:

Dream Twister
Self-Aware Colony
Cloning Vats
Singularity Inductor

Only Completely pointless movie: Supercollider

Other than that, I think Firaxis did a great job on somewhat thought-provoking movies. They were really delightful to watch the first time (I've seen all of them now) and even on replay.

As for techs...I LOVE the quotes from Nicomachean Ethics...(being a scholar of Eudaimonic philosophy myself :-) ).

The stuff by Kant, Plato, and Aristotle was great. Even the stuff by Nietsche was well-placed. Great sense of perspective.

Arnelos
Peacekeeper
Keeper of Wisdom (for anyone who doesn't remember, that was the original name for Pravin Lal's faction in like...July before they changed it to "Peacekeepers")

Having Finally Played the Whole Game, I can say this: The coolest movie is The Supercollider. I can understand why you don't like it, arnelos, but I think it has an elegant simplicity no other movies have.

Scariest: Self-Aware Colony.
Funniest: The Network Backbone. (It's not a monopoly...)

But that was already stated...

My Fav: The Cloning Vats
Why?Because it shows evil lurks in agriculture.Look how Madcow disease was spread from sheeps to cows to humans.
Other notables:
Network Backbone
Longevity Vaccine (humourous)
Hunter-Seeker Algorithim (Unique and has a Sun Tzu quote to boot)
Space Elevator (great, simple quote)
Supercollider (my favorite Einstein quote)
Singularity Inducter (Great visuals and quote)
Merchant Exchange (nice Movie, little use)

Horrible ones (in my misguided opinion):
Bulk Matter Translator (The quote and movie show a beleif in Miriam's soul loss, and, in my view, try to prove god(I won't even properly capitalize his name on purpose) exists on Chiron.
Universal Translator (No way and alien aritifact would have the horrid g-word on it as the work of aliens.)
Self-Aware Colony (More miriam BS for a fundamentalist crusade.or something.)

Now I Go Boom
Village Idiot Lodi

PS A great limerick is one from the Leprechaun 3 movie.Who wants to hear it?

I do have some problems running some of the movies (most notably Supercollider and Ascetic Virtues), they just start, stutter a bit and break down, and I'm dropped into the game again (well, actually the Datalinks).
