Pc Gamer in the UK reviewed ctp and smac. From News Groups
CTP scored 92%, SMAC got 91%. This came as quite a surprise to me seeing
how Civ II got 96%.
The main reasons stated as to why CTP is better than SMAC are that the
new combat system in CTP (with all units in the stack fighting
simultaneously) is much better, and CTP has more depth, and lasts longer
("It took us seven days of constant play to finish our first game").
The only big problem I can see with CTP is that micromanagement, far from
being abolished, seems to have been increased. In the review it mentions
how the build queues are inflexible (you can't insert a new production
order in the middle of one, or delete things), and there are no city
governers like in SMAC. One other rather major problem with CTP is that
you can move units up to an enemy city, fortify them, and the enemy will
attack them with all his defending units until the city is undefended,
you can then move in without ever having to attack. Hopefully these will
be fixed in the release version or in the first patch.
Talking of release versions, these are both beta versions that have been
reviewed - the graphics in SMAC are different from the demo, and Provost
Zakharov is called Saratov...
By the way, it also praised the non-military units in CTP for allowing
new tactics and strategies.
