Ok, I'm new at this, but I seem to be missing something regarding farms. Now I KNOW about the 2 nutrient limit, until you reach the limit remover tech, but that isn't my problem. Farms don't seem to do ANYTHING for me. I check the resource view on a square, and it'll say: Nutrients 1, With Farm 1 .. or 0 and 0. It doesn't matter if the square is flat, rolling, rocky or moist, arid or anything. They just don't seem to work. Am I missing something? Using the demo v1.1 (I think, the new one with the intro movie (that also seemed not to work) I like what I've seen so far, but this farm thing is odd.

What about fungus? So far, it's not good for anything, to me. Burns nice.

I meant, even in a rainy patch, which should give '2, 3 w/ Farm', you read 0,0 (1,1, with CentEmpathy, if I recall) if there's still fungus on it. You should be aware of it tho, 'coz you have to remove it ('F') before you can farm ('f').[Which fungus? Where do you burn it (in)?] |

Nope, my problem isn't fungus on the square. It's a nice (example) moist, rolling square, providing good old 1 nut/1 min. Checking the resource window shows that with a farm I still get 1 nutrient (Boo!) but I can mine it just fine for 2 minerals. Oh, about the fungus, I meant the nice pink xenofungus. I always imagine my formers burning huge swaths of it when they cleared it. |

Ok, I did a bit more experimenting, and while things make a bit more sense (or at least I understand them), I'm still not sure things are working how they should. Although it shows me that farming will NOT improve the square, doing it works just fine (taking the previously mentioned 1/1 square into a 2/1 square with a farm). On the other hand, if I then mine this square, it turns into a 1/2 square... mines are apparently not compatible with farms. Unfortunately, I can't find anything in the datalinks to suggest this is proper behaviour. Solar collectors are incompatible with mines, you can only build one. But why does my mine cancel my farm? And would a solar collector cancel my farm as well? I'm desperately waiting to buy my copy (stores open in 4 hours), and maybe the manual will make sense out of it, but when you want answers, you come HERE, you don't check manuals.Anyone with a bit of experience who can explain the interactions of the various terrain improvements would have my eternal (until I forget) gratitude.

As far as I can recall (don't have time to start the demo on this P133, rather check it home on PII 333 AGP) only farms and mines should be mutually exclusive, when you build one you lose the other. There was a topic sometimes ago discussing about that, they said you would lose the *benefit*, but you kept the picture on the square. Anyway I always get asked for confirmation when I mistakingly try to mine a farm. I'm positive you can put farms and solars together, I always do it, there is an item for that in a Terraforming... submenu w/ road also, and the next item should be Mine+Solar+Road. Heard before about that info display problem maybe it's a random bug. When happened to me, twas fungus influence :I |

the effect of a mine in a farm square is -1 nutrient. which if it really bothers, you can edit the alpha.txt file and remove this "penalty". however, if you are having that much problem with the diffrent things in the game, i suggest you reinstall it (the demo)before you edit anything. and make sure you copy the original .txt to another file, so you can restore to original if so desired.

Have you played the game at all? Farms definitely have effect. On moist/rolling (1 N/ 1 M) building a farms makes it (2/1). If you build a mine nutrients are decreased by 1. If you build a farm, you get back your 1 nutrient. It's in the help file. Someone made a great terraforming page. Look for it in the Alpha Centauri links. |

I was under the impression that the 1w/farm notation refered to the bonus a farm would give you, not the total, so I didn't think anything was wrong. |
