The other difference is that the ACOL site works better, and Asian Flu, the administrator, is responsive to site feature enhancements - in fact there is a whole forum just for site feature requests.

I think you are wrong.

Trip crossed the line once too often (as he did in Apolyton'e with his MarkG spamming) and is now paying the price.

You and your colleagues are not being banned because you do not have that history of obscenity and invective, and Wank has clleaned up his act recently.

HARDMAN was likewise banned for profanity and obscenity - he too crossed the line of public decency.

It's not about censorship, nor about JKM feeling hurt at criticism, its about the core of decent people who come to these forums to discuss the game and its tactice being grossed out by the barrage of crude immature obscene invective being spewed out for all to read.

Yes, we can ignore, by staying away. But we come to the forum because we enjoy the game's challenges, and to interact with each other. So they are hard to miss.

That's what the banning was about. If four or six or eight so strongly feel the need to be obscene in print, and your other forum gives you that "freedom" then go. I'm sure you'll all enjoy reading each other's posts, as we will enjoy them not being here.

So everyone wins

HARDMAN was not BANNED. He got bored and went away.

You can damned well post porn on these boards, and describe in detail how to take a plunger and make it stay up a gay man's ***. Or describe in detail super-glueing and branding gay boys and girls. But Trip gets banned for profanity? Doesn't fly to a lot of people that have argued that those others should have. Inconsistancy = Injustice. And that's what we are on about.

Sure, Trip flamed Jeff in his response to "Why should I let you back? What's your story?". He never contacted Wank or banned Wank for the same behavior. Right, Wank?

That's what this revolves around. Trip went from being a SMACoholic to a diSMACker. And poof. Gone. AND JKM wastes his precious time continuing to keep banning Trip? Trip would have followed the Hardman course and gotten bored eventually and stopped posting. At least until he retried SMAC from sheer boredom.

This is the Land of the Free, and we believe, the Occassionally Just. And that's what we are after... Just treatment of all those involved.

My point, which you seem to miss, is not "decency" or "apple pie" it is inconsistent enforcement, by a site where Firaxis and JKM don't even care enough to make the site features work (they don't own the site, so it's not their problem, yet they can bounce users) - such as edit, search, etc., let alone the double topic bug.

You obviously haven't bothered to check out ACOL, it's hardly an obscenity ridden cesspool. It is a well maintained, responsive, funtionally superior site (by far) with the best talent pool of SMACers.

If you are sincere in your position, and I assume you are, you should request Firaxis to appoint moderators, enforce the rules consistently on all the forums and against all violators, and to make their new policy clear. They haven't done that, and they are not likely too, either.

The user pool at ACOL is growing and will continue to grow, and you don't see idiots like Hardman over there, but serious players with an excellent knowledge base.

I've already posted a topic for volunteers in working on a new, verified and repeatable bug list for post patch 4 and SMACX,
and there will be a SMAC related issues forum for support, troubleshooting and strategy and tactics discussions.

Who are you referring too? I haven't heard any advocates of obscenity, or any suggestion that ACOL is going to be SMACXXX . It is simply a superior site which is responsive to the user community, and with the increase in registration in the last several days, I hardly think its due to us for or six or eight obscenity advocates.

I think the best approach to appointing moderators is peer approval, and appointing people who are positive participants in the site.

If a hardman shows up and causes an issue, it should be discussed first, but if someone is clearly going way outside the bounds, then the topic can be locked, or a temporary revocation until the issue is resolved. I doubt that many Hardmen will show up, since the site is more oriented towards serious gamers.

When I complained to Firaxis about Rimmer's tag line, I made it very clear that I DID NOT want Rimmer banned, but only asked to stop - I don't know if Firaxis talked to him, or if he stopped on his own, but there are intelligent ways to work out problems, that are responsive to the consensus opinions of the user community.
