Has anyone noticed on the harder levels that the computer can send Conventional Missles anywhere on the map? Everytime I try to send troops on a transport, Conventional missles come out all the way on the other side of the map!! I know the Air Drops are better, but he is also sending random missles from one end to another without any Distance Limitation!!

Yes, Brian, it's a well-known problem. It has already been mentioned to Firaxis, and now all we can do is hope & pray that they fix it sometime before we all die of old age... (Patch 4 anyone ?)

There is a workaround suggested by someone (Jeff ?), to disable the missiles in the alpha.txt if it's really becoming too painful for you. I don't have the reference here, but I'm sure someone will be able to help you with that.

The workaround of disabling was sent to Yin26 from Brian Reynolds, I believe. Which had already been suggested on the boards before Brian had replied. But it was a nice thing. [Another workaround posted was to up the range to 999, so that all missiles could hit any target on Chiron.]

BrianB, The "AI" can send missiles wherever it wants. You can disable all missiles in Alpha.txt, or live with it. Firaxis has been trying to close this bug out over the last patch or three. We have been informed that they closed out the loop hole allowing the AI to do this (they had closed out the loophole allowing it to send Planet busters anywhere it wanted to in "Enhancement" 3). We will have to hope that "Enhancement" version 4 is released before SMACX, and that Yang, and any aggressive feeling Computer Opponents, have to follow the same strictures as we poor humans when dealing with missiles.

Also, you can take small advantage of the bug as well and let your missles hit targets anywhere, unfortunately you have no control over where they hit...
When you have a missle built and selected, automate the unit with CTL+A, the computer will then 'smite thine enemies' anywhere it feels like it.

Yes, you can set Conventional missles to 'disable' in the Alpha.txt. For me, that was the only way I could play the game on huge maps (200x200).

Yes, I too play huge maps and would love to disable this feature. Could you please be a little more specific about just what to change in alpha.txt? I see several places where missile values are listed, but am not sure how to "disable". Thanks.

Magnanimous,

I just cut and pasted the portion from the alpha.txt file, but I'm not sure the spacing will work here. Anyway, you can see the section title and note that the last weapon, Conventional Payload, is marked 'Disable,'

That finally made huge maps possible for me.

Many thanks, Yin. Methinks this will work most handily. Now...off to build and expand slowly without worrying about Yang bullying me with missisles from 100 squares away!

Many Thanks!! Any idea when the 4.0 patch will be out? Any idea if this will fix the Missile issue?

BrianB - We had be informed that about the last thing Brian Reynolds did on SMAC before having to go and head up Civ3 was to fix this conv. missile bug. It is suppose to be in the Enhancement 4 patch.

We have heard that patch 4 is a mere few days to mere few weeks from release, depending on things we know not what.

DarkStar, thanks for the info....I heard Civ 3 really stinks. A buddy of mine has it and I told him about SMAC. He said SMAC is much better than Civ3. Have you tried it yet?

BrianB - No. And I doubt anyone else has tried it. Brian Reynolds and Firaxis have not written it yet (that will be the title... Civilization 3). I am guessing you meant Civilization: Call to Power (or just CtP). Yes. I picked it up and tried it. I didn't like it much. I have the new patch, but haven't been in the mood to try it out. There are more interesting things to try or do.

Damn I hope they fix this missle thing SOON!

In my current game I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MANY figgin missiles EVER! I swear the AI (on all sides) has a fetish with the things! And.. because of this distance bug, I get hit with every damn one of them.

I can't fortify any units within cities on my eastern coast. As soon as I do Yang or that 2 dollar brothel queen Deedee comes a knocking (from the opposite hemisphere) with another Tomahawk! And the success rate on these thing are WAY TOO HIGH! Better than 95%.

Here is an idea. You may not like it (not sure I do yet either). But here goes...

Conventional Rockets and Missiles have almost always been used in history as another form of artillery.

Should the game treat missiles the same way as convetion artillery by damaging the target instead complete destruction 95% of the time? Allow it to destroy the target with multiple hits?

OR.. only allow it to destroy/damage certain types of units. Its surely possible to wipe out or render ineffective a fragile aircraft unit sitting at a base or airport, But is it realistic to wipe out entire infantry unit with convetional missiles? Especially one thats dug-in and fortified?

Anyone?

Call to Power is NOT Civ3! Civ3 hasn't been released yet.

Do you all have the V 3.0 patch installed? If so, I thought the bug was fixed.

v3 did not fix the bug, Victor. It was supposed to. Brian personally fixed it for v4, or so it has been reported.

Victor,

That's the funny part, of course. Firaxis also thought it was fixed and flatly refused for quite a time to hear about the issue anymore. But a few of us here have a history of not shutting up, and finally somebody (God bless him, but I forget his name) had a save that proved the missle bug was not fixed--at least not this version of it. I say 'version' because it appears that the missle bug manifested itself in more than one way, such that when Firaxis 'fixed' it (twice already?), there were still different missle bugs to be hunted down.

Once Brian saw the saved game with the (I'll call it 'infinite missle production and launch version' of the bug), it was literally fixed in moments...and only the great programming Gods know how.

Sadly, this was weeks (months? it feels like) ago, and they didn't want to issue a missile specific fix, so we've had to wait and wait and wait...

Ahhh, the memories.

Greasy Pig - A missile ain't artillery.

For comparison, a US naval 5" L38 gun HE round has a 70lb warhead.

A NATO 155mm round has warheads from 56 lbs to 80+ lbs, depending on the many different types.

A TLAM (Tomahawk Land Attack Missile) has a warhead right around 1000 lbs, and a range over ten times that of the 5 inch or 155.
It also costs well over a million bucks.

So missiles are special purpose weapons, but the AI uses them stupidly most of the time.

Mike,

You are absolutely right, "A missile aint artillary". Just like loaded loaded B-17 aint an artillary barage, BUT they "effectively" perform the same role (ranged bombardment).

You've definitely got a point I can't argue with, simply because you are right. My point was not as specific but just as true, missiles/rockets AND for the sake of arguement, aircraft bombardment, have historicly been in the same CLASS as artillery. That is RANGED BOMBARDMENT.
Hell, the U.S. artillery encompassed both aircraft and rockets in their earliest form.

I guess the problem arises with how we abstract convensional missiles within the game. If we asume that these convention missiles are ANYTHING like Tomahawks then I HAVE a big problem, because Tomahawks (even several) can not, have not, wiped out even the lightest equipped infanty unit, an entire airbase YES, but not infantry. It should damage/suppress infantry but not complete destruction with one strike.

Let me put it this way (within the game). These missiles are CHEAP to build, the AI builds and uses them in huge quantities, they can hit ANYWHERE on the planet (bug), and they must have something like a 90%+ kill ratio. If I had this AI ability, I would use 'em too!

HEY RED H

I never said a 2 dollar B.Q. werent pretty, nor lovely. What else is a better return on 2 bucks. Its just that when your seed and money is spent don't expect a refund for any diagnosed embellishments.
