You know, I like to think of myself as being sometimes smart, though compared to many of the people I have met here I am not in your league, especially in the computer field and SMAC game.Well on sunday night I started a new game on Talent level which is the level at which I cant win. I have mastered the first 2 levels with limited understanding of governing an empire. I just play the Darkstar game of krush and kill. But when I get into higher levels it seems there is more to be aware of and I dont keep tabs on it very well. Here's the thing.... I started this game with different settings then I normally play....random events on...abundant native life...high erosion...and not automated unit design. That is the one I screwed up on. I played about 168 years into the game and started wondering to myself "you know ,I havent gotten 1 single mobile unit designed for me yet. What's going on." ...All I have is about 20 units of 1-1-1 scouts and maybe 10 mind worms. Thats it. All my scouts are either vet, commando or elite and all my worms are demons. Then I finally realized, duh, I have to design them myself thru hq. They are not automated. 168 years.....unbeleivable. And I wonder why I suck at this game.(but I keep trying, can only get better right?). That is a massive brain fart. But this is the kicker....I'm winning this time. With just those 2 units. Is this possible? Kind of gives me new insight to what DS was saying about attack/defense ratio cause I have been attacking eveyone and winning with my 1-1-1 vs. their gaitling laser 5-3-1 units and others. I am tempted to play the rest of the game without building any other units to see if I can win. Has anyone else won the game this way? And has anyone else had as serious a mental lapse in the game as to go so far into it, without realizing obvious stuff, and get caught up in the game that time flys by. Un freakin' real I am.

Old Warrior 42,You ain't the only one who's pulled that blunder. That happened to me the first time I chose no auto-design, as well. Though I did figure it out in less than 168 years. I think it only took me about 80. What tipped me off was that I didn't have any sea formers to build. Shows you how much this builder missed the "advanced" weaponry. JAMiAM |

Old Warrior... I have many times forgetten to upgrade or add new chassis to my empire's possible list. Until I decide I need a Drop Colony Pod, or Armored Transport (for sea base defence), or even an attack chopper or attack needlejet. You will find that you will need to upgrade your attack capability to take those 1-4 (or greater)-1 defenders pretty soon though. But with Mind Worms, which use that Psi combat system, you wouldn't need normal High Attack military units unless the comp goes for big time morale in combination with trance units.if you can squash your enemies before they go to high armor, high morale, trance units, you shouldn't need anything more than Native and Scout units. But even with Autodesign off, when you get Fusion, it will automatically update the scouts (I think), raising their cost. Keep an eye out. If you are having fun, keep going. But I bet you can manage a *little* resource management. It only takes a click or two on the city when you are there adjusting what they are building. You do build a few infrastructure buildings don't you? Recycle Tanks... Rec Center... Biology Lab (if you use a lot of Alien units)... swapping between colony pods and military units... But, since you get Transports, Formers, Colony Pods, Probes, and Supply Crawlers automatically, why would you think to go into the workshop? You didn't NEED to upgrade your infantry... you just want a Rover. If you had been the Spartans, you'd have it automatically. Unless you find you need sea power, or air power, of course... Enjoy the Game, Old War-Monger. -Darkstar |

Yea I do build some infrastructure, DS and I guess I should just check on things more in my cities but I dont. I dont know why...except maybe I have gotten to relaxed using automation(but thats probably why I lose at higher levels. Human players should be better at control than the ai). I dont think I will have to worry too much about the ai having really advanced units. I am ahead of all in every category by large margins. I have evey single sp(I built them all before they could, even if I didnt think it was imperative just to keep it out of their hands)I would just rush the sp if the ai was getting close. I guess I have lots more "cash" then the ai.I have just also gotten clean reactor and finally looked at some of the new units I can build. I want to try them but I really want to see if I can win without them. I will have to try both ways I think. Thank god for save game |

I never did use the auto design feature. I love playing around in the DW. BUT, blunders are blunders, and here's mine.I was playing a hotseat game with the other 2 players in the house (blunders are worse when others also see your goof). My sis still prefers auto design on, so everytime I get a new tech, I have to go into the DW, and retire the stoopid units the AI designs. What did I do? Here I am, merrily clicking away, and instead of clicking on upgrade, I click on retire. The unit? trance plasma garrison. my entire garrison force vanished. I had one synthmetal garrison. I also now had about 14 empty bases, half going "drone riot" and of course, most were 75% comleted on a facility. It's a good thing, I had finished off Morgan the turn before, and I was sharing the land mass with a pacted faction. otherwise it would have been a massacre. All my bases were road connected. So don't feel bad, we all goof once in a while. |

Like JAM I will start looking for Sea Formers, and realize I had discovered impact weapons 20 years ago.I also once built about 3 or 4 interceptors before I started wondering why my planes weren't attacking ground targets . I have to have the messages pop up to remind me that stuff is built so that I can go to the bases, (for some reason I very rarely use Queues). I've produced mmultiple formers/colony pods/probe teams without meaning too more times than I can remember. Warrior, give yourself permission top design 1 or 2 prototypes and then use only the prototype unit (with the morale bonus) this will be a high powered assist to your scouts. Goob |

Kapitan, you suck. You need more smileys than that, way more. It isn't hard to do. Then again, I figure you weren't copying and pasting the smiley's, but making them the old fashioned way. So I should look upon how far you got as an achievement in pure stupidity.Trippin Daily -hey, Nell told me to sing my own song, so I'm doing just that.. if you think its wrong, the blame is on her - |

Boy, am I slow...I had noticed that was Kapitan's first post. But I just realized that it's really one of us (or one of YOUR lackeys) that was trying to kill this thread to hide the embarrassment of admitting to not being an 'Udder-SMAC god'. Or is that 'Uber-SMAC god'? (hey, it was a simple typo in VG thread. I'm lucky to get any words correctly spelled. I'm a programmer after all...) -Darkstar |

No Ds I am even slower than you .I dont have any idea who would want to kill this unless they just dont like me. You never know. I was fooling around the other day posing as youngwarrior because Nell wanted to be flamed in the VG thread and I couldnt bring myself to do it so I registered another name and did that all as a goof. But if I can do that than anyone can and I suppose that is one way to trash someone you dont like, I guess. I know I for one dont do that.... I tell you whats up. You then do what you want with the information. Besides, I left it quite simpleton like to know it was me. This person who did this, I have no idea. And I guess I will just move on now.Oh yeah, Aredhran...thanks for the nice guy thing. Sometimes I am....appreciate that though. And DS these comments were not meant against you they were just general mumblings. I already got some sun today and am not looking for any more heat(post smiley face here)(didnt want to actually make one cause I seen enough on this page anyway) |
