How would you order the factions from best to worst? Here's mine:
1. The Hive
2. University
3. Peacekeepers
4. Spartans
5. Gaians
6. Morganites
7. Believers

I think how you do depends on your strategy and your faction and also how you play the game

I don't know wether you mean playing style or ideology, so I'll give you both
Ideology
1. Pks: the qoute for ethic. calc. should say enough
2. Morgan: Viva la capitalisma. Free the market
3. UoP: Hell, I want to know how the universe works
4. Gaians: The enviroment is important, but not more than humans.
5. Spartans: The right to bear arms,
6.Hive: I am not an insect, individuality should be revered
?. Believers: I am a fanatical Christian, but I'm pretty sure that the Bible specifically says not to murder...
Playing style:
1. Morgan: I'm a builder, and I just love to see a size fourteen morgan base surrounded by boreholes
2. Gaians: I really like not being bothered by those damn mindworms
3. Believers: can you say Jihad?
4. Pks: No real major advantages, so they do a bit of everything...
5.UoP: good in the beginning, but I end up a third rate power by the midgame.
6.Spartans: same as UoP, but with less tech...
7.Hive: I hate being broke...

fine ideology rating
1: The Hive, resistance is futile, you shall be assimilated.
2/University, single minded and amoral, my favorite mix.
3/ Morgan, greedy and amoral, opposite to the Hive, but hey, we all want the power!
4/Spartan, slightly suicidal, totally ga-ga so that makes them sweet
5/ Gians Waa waaa..environment.. oh do shut up you stupid bitch
6/ PK Killing is wrong, no reeeally...bang!
7/ Toxic Avengers, bunch of blind hypocrites

Bear in mind that I only mean this for single player games:
1) Hive
2) PKs
3) Gaians
4) Believers
5) University
6) Morgan
7) Spartans
For multiplayer games the Spartans move up on the list, as do the University for their fast research to impact rovers.

7. The Hive.
Keep in mind that 6 and 7 are guesstimates, as I have never played either faction, and never plan to. I disagree with the aims of both factions ideologies, and flatly refuse to play the "bad guys" in a sim like this.

As for philosophical tendencies, hasn't anyone noticed that the grandest victory, Transcendence, is _precisely_ the surrender of individualism to achieve godhead, a philosophy entirely espoused by The Hive?

For University I'm good at sorting out the drones, VW is useful for this faction, and the enhanced tech. No problem with probe, use HSA.

I have never seen the Uni build a decent military in all my games. I make Zak my puppet, and the game is essentially over.
And WTF do the rest of you clowns like Yang so damn much and hate Miriam? Yang's the biggest fking a-hole in the game and you know it.

My favorite to play,
1.Belivers

4.The Hive

6.Peacekeepers
7.Morgan Industries
I play as the Belivers very much and have not been disapointed in any of my games. I manage to maintain a powerful military and economy at the sametime. And my people are much happier. I most clearly do not support The Hive's social agenda, but instead support the belivers in their quest. Who would want to ally themselves with a tyrannical, atheist, despot who clearly has no regard for human wellfare. I am appaled at the support for him and the lack of support for the Belivers. I ask a question. What is wrong with a life of religous worship?

Anyone who doesn't rate the believers needs to work on their probe warfare - research is no problem if you have probes out gathering for you.

Yang what's up with that. I like yang i trust him as an ally and he is an excellent one at best.Oh sure he is obsessed with police state. But Yang always happens to be 2nd or 3rd best in the end. And when we both are TRUE pact brothers the whole world is screwed. He rarely asks for tech and when he asks for money he is very reasonable. Well This is why I think we all hate him except perhaps me.
He is a perhaps the greatest reflection of my playing style.
He is also quite cheap with selling cities to me.
