SMAC's AI could smack most other AI silly. The decision trees here are big and complex and yada yada yada. Yes I want it better, I want the feeling of challenge (other than over coming cheating) when playing a PC. I am sure that in design meetings Brian could be heard saying "I have a great idea for making SMAC a huge success, Let's make the AI really weak, Formers that run around in circles would do wonders for our sales. Not to mention giving them governors that couldn't find their asses with both hands and a map." First remember that most people here are in the top tier of Strategy Gamers, we should be able to beat any AI that is put out. While many new gamers and even others that have been doing this awhile but don't have the whole resource management thing down yet will have trouble with it. Whatever is put out next will be better, and no matter how much better it is many of us will be screaming for it to be even better. jimmytrick, I know you enjoy the game and weren't trying to put it down, but I just wanted to maintain the integrity of the SMAC love fest. You're absolutely correct about the top strategy gamer thing - I'm by no means a master strategy gamer, and I find the AI pretty challenging even at medium levels. I'm simply not all that interested in learning the math behind the resource management systems so well that I can beat Transcend level - in fact I try and avoid conflicts with the computer when possible. I play isolationist games and try and get the AI to leave me alone. |

Hey! Lord Zod/Jimmy Trick! This is a SMAC love-fest. We'll do our screaming and whining elsewhere. Got to give those SMACkers at Firaxis a pat on the back now and then, or they will go beg to be members of the Civ3 team (like Brian) or SoT3 with Sid. They did a heckova job overall, and need to be reminded of that from time to time.No Jam-You-Are. I haven't changed sides. You are going to have to up the power on your Dream Twister to get through my Faction's Neural Amp. And thanks again Firaxis. I appreciate the game! -Darkstar |

I love SMAC. I learned CIV 6 years ago by watching my dad play, then I jumped right on the bandwagon for Civ II. Now I'm 13 and I have to say that I love SMAC. I've memorized the tech tree, run a web site (http://ac.strategy-gaming.com/), the works. Now I can't wait for Civ III!!! Everyone, show your support! Let's get this thread up to 253 posts (right before it crashes ) |

Hey Evil Conqueror, I've been idly wondering when my sons would be ready for playing CIV like games (my 3 and 1/2 watches, but complains about "Bugs" (I don't think he means features... ) though otherwise I am not sure what "bugs" he sees.) So you started playing at 7 cool, 3 to 4 years to wait...Goob Reading Sun-Tzu to his son at night Showing him the SMAC Tech Tree when ever I can get him away from watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang... |

Smac is great ...Goob I think you are right about the level of strategy gamers talents in here(except mine of course). Most people in here have what seems to me to be a high understanding of empire building, resource management and micromanagement. That is my shortcoming. I can be an excellent general and tactician....but a crappy governor or president...whatever. I tend to be into the military aspects of the game and suffer in my empire control. I can manage my resources well, but I find that part tedious and time consuming. I am trying to learn though. I never played civ 1 or 2. I eventually will. In time.....to help me better get into the aspect of micromanaging my empire. I tend to play pure war games as opposed to empire building games. |

SMAC is just fantastic. I played it for a month, won several times, decided that I squizeed all of it, and set it aside. But couple days later I realized, that I miss reddish landscapes, sound of gattling laser, and even outrageously-annoying conversations with Sister Miriam... So I keep playing and playing, and SMAC keeeps surprising me with new twists, new features, new tactics I can use.... Guys in Firaxis did a terrific job. Way to go! (especially after pat.. ughm... enhancement pack 4.0 ) |
