How do you place a player's starting location with the screwed up map editor?

As far as I can tell, I don't think you can. There are certain spots where your civilization seems to be more likely to start out, and you just have to keep trying until you start out in one of the good ones. If there's any other way to do it, I haven't found it.

Yes you can, you place a colony pod for each faction down, you then play a turn, and set them up as bases.

... and don't forget that you have to Toggle Editor Only Mode if you want to be able to tell the colony pods to build bases... in Editor Only Mode, no units will move.

Thanks, but now I have another problem: how do I get it not to mark the game as a 'cheat' scenario? I just wanted to put everyone on their own continent for a late conflict.

Why won't it save starting bases with the map? It saves the CivZone kind of, but not the start location. What am I missing here?

A map file is only a map. If you want the map plus other stuff you have to save it as a a scenario. Took me a while to figure that one out too. Such wunnerful docs.

Try creating a scenario from the scenario menu rather than starting a game and going into the editor to get rid of the CHEATER!

Save your scenario and then choose it when you start a new game. Kinda convoluted but it works.

If you want some pre-made scenarios with the factions spread out, you can download two of them at:

Albeit they are only Standard size, but all factions are definitely spread out (and the maps are pretty cool)!

Thanks, I'll check it out. For now though, I'm playing on the Big Lack size planet- 300x300.

Pushing the system? Darn right, at the price we paid for it!
