I am not sure how to use crawlers. I send them out to get resources and press "O" is that all i need to do or do i need to send them to a base to unload?

That's all you need to do.
You can also send them to a base to help build secrect projects.

No, the nutrients/minerals/energy will automatically be added to the bases total each turn, and the crawler will stay in place.

Note that your supply vehicle will only bring stuff back to it's home city, so you may want to "re-home" it to some other place than the base that produced it.
