player2: excellent score, I've finally been trying your "builder strategy" and have been much more successful. . .I am in mid game as the Gaians, "transcend iron man" (builder strategy) and everything is looking good. |

Just bought SMAC after being a CivII addict for a long time. As my third game I decided to try TI as the Gaians on huge map of planet. Ended up alone on one of the continents and used my CivII builder type strategy to win with those two secret projects at the end. Got an AC rating of 1039% and am now wondering if I will find any challenge in this game playing against the computer. Can someone tell me which settings are the hardest to win without editing files.DuncanI |

Duncan: To be honest, what worked in CIV2 more or less works in SMAC as well. Having said that, SMAC is way more complicated and, if you ask me, more fun. The Gaians are probably the easiest faction because of their advantages against Planet itself (there's disagreement about that, but they're definitely up there in the top three), which might be why you won so easily. Also, ending up on your own continent on a huge map probably makes it easier to win without having to fight any other factions very much, especially if they're all stuck together and so end up fighting early on. You could try a smaller map on TI level, playing a "harder" faction (i.e. one of the ones that usually loses big-time when you play against the AI). I've always thought Morgan is difficult to play, unless you're able to go for economic victory and/or get enough energy together to buy funky troops. People will disagree with me, but in my opinion the easiest factions to play are roughly in this order: Gaians, UoP, PKs, Spartans, Hive, Believers and Morgan. You could also try changing the terrain settings: use a random map and set it to sparse cloud cover (i.e. very arid land, needs a lot of terraforming whereas the AI gets cheats for that), abundant native lifeforms (unless you're the Gaians), weak erosive forces (lots of rocky patches) and 30-50% sea coverage (the AI makes poor use of sea bases and naval units). In the Customize Rules section, turn off "Don't restart eliminated players", choose Blind Research so you can't go straight for Air Power or whatever (the AI, again, gets cheats for this and still goes for its favourite techs) and you could try the "More aggressive opponents" option as well, although I've found this sometimes makes them wipe each other out too fast. Or just build your own scenario... make a huge map, stick each faction on a large continent with only tiny land bridges joining them, and then watch factions like the Believers and the Hive spread like the plague! Of course, you could still hide out on your continent and just go for the Transcend or Economic victory... oh well Basically, if you're really good at CIV, you'll be really good at SMAC too. But it's still got a lot more to offer than CIV. Nell |

Is that 12% Trippin or is it a typo? -Parker |

Hive, Librarian ironman (higher levels too aggressive) 10,020 points 626% 1792 pop 856 commerce 76 tech 130 Transcent thought (13 of 'em) 700 SP's 1456 objective (what does this mean?) 100% ironmanI got tired of this game about 2300 after eradicating Lal and Santiago (Zakharov was a submissive pact brother --he fainted at the sight of my forces, I guess!) and decided to go for a diplomatic victory after Clinical Immortality. But the Gaians (#2 faction, bu way behind) refused to submit, so it turned into a conquest. The other factions made pacts with me, so this helped the commerce score. I ended up finishing the ascent long before mopping up the gaians. |

Note to high score seekers: using a builder strategy yields the highest scores, in my experience. Builder strategies yield very high populations, commerce, and wonder points. For my score, my largest non-objective point contributor was actually my commerce rating (about +1200) followed closely by population (+1150), wonders (+800) , and an objective (transcendence) score of +1400. Add the Ironman and transcend level difficulty bonuses, and you can easily achieve +800% scores. Scores exceeding 1000% are possible if you drag the game out to the last possible turn; my game ended 70 turns before the limit. Try this and see if things don't drastically improve. Good luck! |

Thinker, UoP: 3649 273% That's my highest score (so far ). Singularity, how on Planet did you get a lower percentage with a higher numeric score (or was that 389%)?LoD |

439% Transcend level / transcendence victory. Not too great but it was in only 154 turns. [I'm tempted to go back and press "next turn" 100 times seeing some of these scores....]. Duncan1: For a _really_ hard game try never building [or owning] more than one city. It's just possible to reach alpha centauri with this restriction in CIV, so with the crawlers added... Also has the virtue of being a more manageable game than having 100's of the things... |
