Hail,

I can't believe I haven't seen this mentioned on this board yet. Doesn't anyone know what important event in history happened thirty years ago today?

guess there isn't much to discuss. But I'm wondering if all of you all feel it was worth it. Basically we spent millions of dollars to prove a point, and bring back some rocks. Not that I wish we hadn't done it.

IMNSHO it was worth every dime...

We didn't spend millions going to the moon...we spent billions. Around $25 billion, I think.
And it was worth every dime, that's for sure. Would have been even better if the classic American attention span could be held for more than 1 landing and 1 near-fatal accident. The whole 'Eh, been there, done that' attitude that's invaded the populace's view of space is...disgusting. A whopping 12 people have stepped foot on another planetary body, and we haven't been back in 28 damn years.
I'll vote for whatever president promises to support NASA in a lunar colony or a Mars shot.
Hell, I'll even support a joint Microsoft/AOL venture into space (Gates could probably fund a Mars shot or asteroid-capture on his own).
I'll support any company that wants to commercialize space...just as long as we get -out- there!

It was worth a sight more than the nukes the money would probably have been spent on otherwise.

Whenevr I hear someone say space is a waste of money, I want to scream. If you want to talk about wastes, look at America, we spend 270 billion a year on defense.

I HATE REPUBLICANS!!!

And Democrats for that matter.

I disagree about defense money being a waste. There are lots of countries that want to, and would tear us apart if we didn't have a strong defense. But this isn't the thread for that. I do think the whole nuclear weapons program was a waste of money. How many times over can you destroy a country?. I would like to see a mars landing. But it doesn't seem to be in the public interest.
