Is there some kind of sporting context, or are you just praising their general wholesomeness? |

On Saturday the USA women's soccer team won the World cup by beating China 5-4 in a shootout. |

Although a praise of US women's general wholesomeness seems ok by me too. |

Really? Nice one. How come the US women win the world cup while the men are nowhere near?

Two hours of play and the whole thing is decided by dumb luck. No wonder Americans won't watch soccer. American football at least has strategy. |

Well, the game wasn't great. I mean, what the hell happened to the Chinese? What a dour performance compared to when they trashed the Norwegians! Had they played as they did then they would have murdered the Americans, because their play left a lot to be desired as well. And Norway lost the third place final in a shoot-out to *gasp* Brazil! Losing to Brazil in women's football, who would have thought? And Brann lost as well... *sigh*

Trappist, it's because male athletes are getting million-dollar contracts to play (gridiron), basketball, hockey, and baseball. But hey, first basketball, then hockey, now soccer. USA women rule! |

Forget about that. In the real world, Brazil beat Argentina in one of the most intense matches I have ever seen. Superb skills, hard work, high tempo. Strong challenges, had everything. |

>>>Two hours of play and the whole thing is decided by dumb luck. No wonder Americans won't watch soccer. American football at least has strategy. The game has to be decided somehow, and asking the players to continue until heat exhaustion set in would hardly be fair. This same point has been debated endlessly on other newsgroups (esp during last years' men's World Cup) with no better solutions. Congratulations USA and China for an exciting match! |

Khan Singh: "American football at least has strategy. " Football DOES have strategy, just more spontaneous. John III |

The trouble with football is the goalie. No matter how good your setup is or how competant your players, the goalie stops almost everything. Good tactics aren't rewarded by goals.Eliminate the goalie. |

To break it down into gaming terms: American Football: TBS with RTS battle resolution Football: RTS(one of the more strategic ones; not one of the twitchfest ones) |

Yes, football (soccer) doesn't have all those (boooring) breaks between plays and no time-outs like the American game, so in-game strategy is more limited. Spontaneity and imagination are some of the greatest things about football (soccer). And aaarrrggh!!! I don't get to watch the Copa America (South American Men's Championship) either! |

I watched most of the game. (Well, I was playing the computer while the game was on [and after], but I was listening to it). I like Soccer. I played it when I was young. Soccer probably won't ever be real popular in the US because watching it requires something the US lacks: An attention span. Even in the fastest paced and highest scoring soccer games, there are extended lulls where nothing much is visibly happening. Americans don't like that. |

The real reason that soccer will never become as popular as the other major sports is simple: Money.Advertising drives American sports, gentlemen. However, soccer has continuous action, so where will you put the commercials? |

HolyWarrior- "soccer" has been the most popular team sport in the world for at least the last 100 years. You're probably right about the US angle though. |
