Afetr installing Linux I am stuck with Netscape Navigator, but this browser is plain pathetic.
-What I resize the browser window it reloads the page - from the net...
-Some pages just chrash it; fx when I enter www.eetimes.com it simply closes down. Not even an error message. And if you were using 3 other netscape windows at the same time then: too bad.
-Most of the time it seems to insist on loading the entire page before showing a single line of text.

I think Netscape need some competition on the UNIX platform.
I miss IE...

Netscape is gone, Opera is our last hope and it's not a very good one.

Thue, you're right about Netscape beeing crap so far, but, the rumors(not just rumors) are that the new browser(Gecko)-Communicator5 is going to hold swell on Unix too..it's still a developers ver, but you can get it and try it out if you want: www.mozilla.com

Interesting, eetimes does no such thing for me and I've not seen similar problems here.

As far as the resize, not sure, but I think I've not really noticed it(yes, it does go out and hit the page to see if it has changed, and if any images are different it'll load them, but I don't think I've seen it do a full reload).

But for IE, I've more problems with that than I can shake a stick at(admittedly, if I actually cared enough to look into it I could probably take care of some of them), so I prefer Netscape.

"I think Netscape need some competition on the UNIX platform."
As I recall, IE is available on Solaris and HP-UX. Should be a releatively minor matter for a Linux port(compared to, say, the port from NT to Solaris), if MS had the inclination.
And there's a few other options that I've not looked at in some time, such as Emacs/W3(apparently they've changed the name of Gnuscape Navigator) which runs in emacs, but I don't know where these stand right now.

M$ would never port IE to Linux. It would be like them shooting themselves in the foot. They would also never port Office. Like shooting themselves in the head.

What would happen if M$ port Office to Linux. The number of Linux of Linux users would triple overnight. Also no-one would continue to use Windows for anything except a coaster .

Who needs Office? I've got emacs!
Looking at the emacs browser as we speak.

btw: Lynx works well if you are looking at text only pages.

----------
The greatest part of netscape is when I open a HTML file from my harddisk I get the error message:
could not fdopen() the stderr:
Success

Thats just like the messages I make when I program. Only I remember to remove them be fore I call the program finished.
Really pep up your oppinion of the program.

Heh - the emacs browser is only 427KB. This one is going to work well with my not-so-overwhelming amount of RAM.

I am a bit disappointed at the amount of RAM the Linux GUI's use. Even a cleen boot has all 32 MB+ 14 virtual RAM used.
A part of it seems to be stored there just to be reached quickly(It would work much more sluggishly than it does if I were really out of RAM), but it's a bit much anyway.

Any Linux people care to enligthen me?

Damn, i gave you the worng adress in my previous post. But hell, it takes you there neways. Here's the right one: www.mozilla.org . I just glanced that there are some Linux plugs available there, so go ahead and check it out. You'll find the new browser under SeaMonkey(Gecko) or Communicator 5.

Thue, Linux caches some files because they are used often. This stuff is easily overwriten when a program needs it.

"I am a bit disappointed at the amount of RAM the Linux GUI's use."

All depends on the window manager you use. Some are very slim(gwm, twm, etc.), some can be quite large(fvwm2, etc.).
