You have midsummer on a different day to us then? Ours was 21st I think, summer solstice. I'm confused. Am I in a time warp? |

No, we're not the only ones celebrating it! I'm sure at least the other nordic countries are, too... (Valtyr, Thue, Jay? Is this correct?)Why midsummer's eve is not on the summer solstice: Some bonehead thought that it would be nice to always have it on a friday so as to give everyone an extended weekend. What they didn't plan for was the fact that placing a holiday on a friday greatly increased the risk of Alcohol Abuse. |

Surely that's a good thing! Mind you in the sun starved north I'm sure you need a party. |

I had a crappy midsummers eve ! It was raining in Göteborg and I didnīt feel like getting drunk. I did try, mind you.Ambro I think itīs traceable way back to the bronze age or something. Itīs something to do with the summer solstice being the longest day of the year I think. Provost Happy Birthday Bishop *not as drunk as he wanna be* |

Here in Norway we celebrate St. John's Eve (sankthansaften/jonsok) June 23rd. We have bonfires, parties, games etc. Where I live in Laksevåg in Bergen we have the largest St. John's Eve bonfire in the country. It's made entirely of fish barrels and stands 20+ metres tall (We're in the local Guinness' Book of Records. Yay!). This year Laksevåg broke tradition and held the official event on sunday instead. Well, it was pouring down on sunday and the 23rd was a really beautiful day, so... |

The British solstice celebrations take place throughout the night of the 20th June at a number of sacred sites. Stonehenge is impossible these days so the focus has shifted to the other major stone circles- Avebury, Stanton Drew and Callanish. There are also major celebrations on sites such as Glastonbury Tor, Cerne Abbas and Uffington.Much consumtion of psychedelic materials and a lot of singing, dancing and screaming at the rising sun is the general trend. It's a blast- I'd recommend it to anyone.

And why is Stonehenge "impossible?" You have to pay money to rent it for the night or something? |

I hate living in America...there are no interesting holidays! Do we get Midsummer's Eve? Nooo, we have the 4th of July! Oooh, a revolution because of taxes! Boxing day? Nope. Midwinter's Day? Nope. What do we get instead? Over-commercialized crap! And what isn't commercialized is a stupid rural holiday, like the one in the town I live in (I refuse to call it my home town) we have Sucker Day! SUCKER DAY!!!! A HOLIDAY FOR A FISH!!! AND I HAVE TO MARCH IN THE STUPID PARADE BECAUSE I'M IN BAND AND HELP WITH THE BOOTH BECAUSE I'M IN HONOR SOCIETY AND WHENEVER I COMPLAIN PEOPLE SAY "Well hey, we got out of school for it!" So I'm guessing that Americans will do anything if they can get out of work! AAAAAAGHHHHHH!Uh...sorry, I just tend to hate Sucker Day...I'm sorry if my outburst offended anybody... I think I'll just go now... |

Snowfire.I describe Stonehenge as "impossible" because to get into it at the solstice requires getting through a 3-mile exclusion zone enforced by extremely gung-ho riot police who will kick the **** out of you if you try to get near the site. Ever heard of the Battle of the Beanfield? |

he he a Finn can smell vodka from miles away I never forget when I met those finns on Viking Line. They had 1 and a half bottle(1.5 litre) each of some crappy vodka and drank it right from the bottle. 2 hours later three of them had passed out in their cabin with a thick *something* that is supposed to be in the stomach all over the place. The remaining Finn also passed out about an hour later after he had molested a poor girl and been crawling around for a while right on the floor in the cabin in all the *you know what* I don't no what the point is with this story other than No One Can Drink Like a Finn! I had an exellent midsummer eve except that I worked untill 9.30pm And when I arrived to the party I quickly noticed that I was a little bit behind in the drinking I quickly catched up though and had a great time The weather was perfect I started to work at 7am the day after though so I only got an hour sleep and had a horrible hangover I believe that I'm starting to recover now though
