Hey all. A friend and I plan on starting our own little PC and console game company after college. I was on the 'net a few days ago and found a page full of 3D engines. I said to myself "Hey, we could make a little practice game right now!" So I downloaded an 11.5 meg file which supposedly contained the Kick engine. I unzipped the file, double clicked on the .exe file, and a black screen! Let's say I was mad. After that, I downloaded several smaller engines, just to find out that they are crap. So, I decided to ask my fellow SMACers: Do any of you know where I can get a free 3D engine for a Half-Life meets Final Fantasy VII type of game? I have no development tools, so that would help also. Does such a thing exist???

Yes, I got one from somewhere, I forget where, for a game that was scrapped, the game sucked but the engine was pretty good.

BTW, I hope your company does something, then, when I graduate in 2 years(CS major), you can hire me.

Let's face it:

2 people are not going to be able to make a FFVII-Half-Life Cross-Over. Both these games had well over 100 programmers, artists and designers working simultaneously for over a two years before completion. Do you have any qualifications whatsoever? Capital? A well-laid-out business plan? Aything?

Two of my friends recently made a Mac game. They used C++ as programming language, made graphics and animations with CorelDraw, Photoshop and Cinema 4D. It took them five months to make the game. Of course it isn't as large as FFVII or other commercial games, but the graphics are awesome!

Maybe for FFVII they paid alot of programmers but lets look at Firaxis and ID Software. How many programmers do they have? No more than five each.

Or even better, lets look at Sports Interactive, the company that made the championship manager series. How many programmers do they have? No more than three.

I think it's still possible to make great games in your bedroom. Maybe not as stunningly looking as some of the latest games but if you can get a balanced and addictive gameplay you won't need the graphics.

Not to mention that we need bedroom programmers to get some new genres. I think it's been a while since a game of it's own genre came out.

You misunderstand- this game isn't commercial, it's for our own personal use. We aren't gonna sell it, we're gonna use it on our own computers only. It's just for fun.

ZRand007: Your best bet for asking this type of question is in the Lionhead Discussion Forums. Most of the posters are young, but you will find them very willing to help you with any questions. Do a search. IIRC, there was a good console thread a couple of weeks ago.
