(sorry non-skandinavians, but I dont' have the time to translate this. If I can learn English and read your posts, then maybe you should learn Danish )
Advarsel!!! Send dette brev videre til ALLE du kender og helst også en masse
du ikke kender.
Der er for øjeblikket en særdeles farlig edb-virus i omløb, som alle bør
holde kraftigt øje med.
Lad derfor være med at modtage en e-mail med titlen: "Perforér mit lungevæv
langs linien!!".
Rygtet vil vide at e-mailen oprindeligt blev sendt af den svenske
tennisspiller Stefan Edberg, i et særdeles usportsligt forsøg på at ændre
dommerens afgørelse af en dobbelt servefejl begået mod Ivan Lendl i en
satellit-turnering i Peru.
Modtager du en sådan mail er det allerede for sent... Mens du læser den
farlige mail, indeholdende en ellers harmløs tekst omhandlende buslinjerne
5, 16 og 350S samt generelle opfordringer til skødesløs omgang med eksotiske
træsorter, går virusen igang med sit fatale
forehavende.
I første omgang går det udover din computer... Din skærm får ca. 2.5 tommer
mindre synligt skærmareal og din mus bliver op til 14 gange tungere.
"Så kan jeg jo bare købe en ny computer", tænker du, men det stopper slet
ikke her.
I løbet af de næste par dage vil du opleve at det bliver komplet umuligt at
opdrive den blå Ritter Sport i alle Netto-forretninger, nogenlunde samtidigt
med at op til 3 cd'er af mærket: "Mr. Music" vil snige sig ind i din samling
lige dér hvor du mindst venter at finde dem.
De portrætbilleder du har siddende i eventuelle pas og kørekort vil indenfor
14 dage blive mærkbart grimmere og din pung vil langsomt fyldes op med
kassebon'er fra IKEA i Århus.
Fodboldklubben Silkeborg vil, fra den dato du inficeres, vinde de næste 5
sæsoners fodboldmesterskab samt 2 pokaltitler og anfører Morten Bruun vil
stå frem i "On-side Special" på TV3 og udtale: "Jeg har altid haft det på
fornemmelsen".

Thue, I could send this to everyone I know, just that it wouldn't help much as neither I nor they would understand it, except that it is something dangerous...
My danish is limited to "Nej til unionen" or so... I've even forgotten the slogan of the yes-campaign...

Have you been playing with a dictionary, or have you found an online translator as babelfish that works with Danish?

Hvad tænker du ? is Danish - it means "What are you thinking?". But the frase doesn't really sound rigth in Danish, try Swedish or Norse instead. There it would sound more rigth, as it would means "What do you think?".
I can't judge how close the spelling is in Swedish or Norse.
I think I understand the German too - I should be able too after those many years with German in school.

Oh, and the yes-wing didn't have a slogan. A more popular no-slogan was "Holger og konen siger nej til unionen" (Holger and the wife says no to the union) Holger was te leading left-wing EU-opponent

OK, the sentence in the two written languages of Norway + my own dialect (Bergen):
bokmål: Hva tenker du på?
nynorsk: Kva tenkjer du på?
Bergen: Ka tenkar du på?

No, it's just (sorry to say that ) pretty close to german, so it was a rather safe guess:
Advarsel - not hard to guess
farlig - gefährlich; ch often came from g, scrap the "ge"; and I have "fährlig"
virus - what else ?
I omløb - Umlauf; f came from b (or both from that old germanic th); o and au; um and om... not really hard.
I think I understand parts of the rest, but most parts are way off...

There's a german word, "hurtig", which means "fast" as well. It's just a bit outdated and sounds funny; weird to find it in danish...

-ombudsman
-kokkenmodding
I think I know where they come from ; They are direct letter-for-letter taken from Danish where they are made from smaller word. But if I was English I would wonder about their origin.
weird to find it in danish...
Denmark was under massive german influence ~150 years ago. I think German was close to be allmost as widespread as Danish.
Almost every sentence has at least one word with german roots.
Today English have a fair amount of influence.

Not true. Both the Danish b in omløb and the German f in Umlauf come from Old Germanic p.

We also have adopted the ombudsman, just slightly germanised as "Ombudsmann" (or "Ombudsfrau").
But kokkenmodding ? Never heard it, though "kokken" (Kochen/Küche) and "modding" (Moder ~ rotting stuff) seem familiar.

We have tried ombudsperson, but that's quite a mouthful. Four syllables. Ombudswoman would also be four syllables. So we stay with ombudsman for both genders, just like we stay with chairman for both genders.

Looked up some words in an online dictionary, just "muttan" was not there. If that is what I think it is, that's no real surprise.... I can't translate it into german, but into our dialect (not that it will help anyone...)

Translation into English:
kokkenmodding = kitchen midden, or midden for short.
Middens are those piles of shells (etc) that archaeologists like to dig through to study ancient people's diets.

Midden is actually an early loan word from Danish mødding. First noticed in writing in the 14th century.
Mødding comes from møgdyng(e) where møg=muck and dyng(e)=heap (cf. dung).
In Norway we sometimes still say møkkadynge .

How often is the word "muttan" used in Norway?? I don't think that it's that common here in Sweden. It also sounds more like a "Norvegian" word

Of course we in Norway and Denmark (and Iceland as well) have æ as one one of the keys of our keyboards. The letter is much more common in Danish than in Norwegian. The Swedes use ä for the approximately same sound. On the other western keyboards you have to type Alt+0230 for the æ and Alt+0198 for the Æ, I think. I don't think it's one of the Central European or Cyrillic keyboards' ASCII characters, though. I'll have to check.

Hvad tænker du ? is Danish - it means "What are you thinking?". But the frase doesn't really sound rigth in Danish, try Swedish or Norse instead. There it would sound more rigth, as it would means "What do you think?". I can't judge how close the spelling is in Swedish or Norse. I think I understand the German too - I should be able too after those many years with German in school. Oh, and the yes-wing didn't have a slogan. A more popular no-slogan was "Holger og konen siger nej til unionen" (Holger and the wife says no to the union) Holger was te leading left-wing EU-opponent

But if I was English I would wonder about their origin. weird to find it in danish... Denmark was under massive german influence ~150 years ago. I think German was close to be allmost as widespread as Danish. Almost every sentence has at least one word with german roots. Today English have a fair amount of influence.

Valtyr	posted 06-27-99 06:32 PM ET Of course we in Norway and Denmark (and Iceland as well) have æ as one one of the keys of our keyboards. The letter is much more common in Danish than in Norwegian. The Swedes use ä for the approximately same sound. On the other western keyboards you have to type Alt+0230 for the æ and Alt+0198 for the Æ, I think. I don't think it's one of the Central European or Cyrillic keyboards' ASCII characters, though. I'll have to check.
