Now he would have made a great faction leader for the SMACX faction - the Monster Raving Loony Party

Has he really died? Only knew of him from Monty Python and once saw him on stage with John Major when they were announcing the election results.

He's dead? It's probably just one of his pranks!

The epitomy of Englishness.

(It's Sutch, by the way.)

Here is the Official Monster Raving Loony Party website:

I haven't seen the episode in years, and I may have misremembered if they mention Lord Sutch by name, but they did a spoof of the British elections and in each successive district they would have weirder and weirder parties starting with the monster raving loony party. Each Candidate's vote total was listed in descending order so you had a scene where Lord So and So, conservative party 350,341 Someone else Labour party 245,455 and Brian Blam-blam nu-wong boing boing "Hello sailor!" monster raving loony party 3. It was quite funny, having never experienced a British election I thought it a great parody, until I saw some actual British election returns and sure enough there was Lord Sutch standing with John Major awaiting the election return announcements! Anyway I hope the party carries on.

Evidently he was having so much fun he decided that suicide was the only answer...

He was a sad case in every sense. A failed rock'n'roll star (his act was frighteningly bad)a failed actor. He turned political failure into his raison d'etre and failed in that too.

Walruskkkch:

Interesting theory that the Monty Python sketch and the Monster Raving Loony party were related.

Sutch first stood for Parliament in 1963 (according to his obituary), but not for the Monster Raving Loony party until 1983. My M.P. script book says the sketch was called 'Election Night Special', and the episode was broadcast first in November 1970. The parties were the Sensible Party and the Silly Party, although my personal favourite is Kevin Phillips-Bong, who ran on the Slightly Silly ticket.

And the name of the Silly Party candidate that you were searching for:

on the TV tonight it was said that he was turned down by Major and Blair for a real place in the house of lords,

it would have been entertaining to have Lord Screaming Lord Such in the place. he'd have been no less mad than some of the old Fools that are there now

I was operating from memories some 20 years old for the Python reference. Probably just confused things with subsequent information. Thanks for the clarifying information.

Noisy: wasn't there the "very silly party" as well ? Also, I'm sure the sketch is somehow related to the "upper class twit of the year" or whatever it was called...

Roland:

Yes, there was a Very Silly candidate, but if you think I'm going to type all of that name in, you can think again.

I don't know about any connection with the Upper Class Twit of the Year: there's no mention of it in the script for that show.

If you want a recording of the sketch, it is on 'Monty Python Live at Drury Lane', in a slightly different form.

Just the similarities between the "candidates"...

This just made it into the local rag, The Boston Globe;

RIP - Screaming Lord Sutch, a.k.a.
David Sutch, who died last week at
58, an apparent suicide by hanging.
Sutch, who was being treated for
depression, was a rocker/politician,
a man who politicked in a top hat
and gold lame suits and drove a Union
Jack car(pre-Austin Powers). He
founded the Monster Raving Loony Party
in 1963. Its slogan was "Vote for
insanity - you know it makes sense."
"For many years he made a unique
contribution to British politics,"
said a spokesman for Prime Minister
Tony Blair.

Sutch was also a flamboyant singer-
performer who sang cocky hard rock
songs alongside Jeff Beck, Noel
Redding, John Bonham, Keith Moon,
Ritchie Blackmore, and Jimmy Page
among others. He had two crazy albums
on Cotillion including the live
"Hands of Jack the Ripper."

For those performances, Sutch would
be carried through the crowd in a
casket, only to emerge as the Ripper
singing, "Hands of the Ripper, so evil
so strong/The way he sees it, he can
do no wrong."

A man before his time?

As always, I remain,
