I recently read an article where the catholic church wanted to stop Geri Halliwell (This is a good thing) from helping the UN in the Philippines. The reason they gave was that she was speaking for the use of contraceptives.I say to the catholic church- Hello? What century are we living in here? You and me both know contraception is vital for human development, for women to achieve equality and for the third world ever to catch up economically. So how can you be opposed to it? The catholic church is stopping development worldwide and killing thousands in the process.

Ridiculous. Why can't the catholic church remove its support from what it doesn't believe in? It would be like asking you to financially support an anti-contraceptive campaign whether you like it or not. But to your points..."What century are we living in here?" The 21st. Population and population control are going to be very important issues in the 21st century. "You and me both know contraception is vital for human development, for women to achieve equality and for the third world ever to catch up economically." You could turn your thesis on its head. Contraception is effectively a first-world idea to keep population down in developing countries so that they do not gain power. Europe, for instance, is not growing in population while other parts of the world are. In the long-run, this means that Europe will play an increasingly diminished role on the world stage. Re women's equality... Contraception is a big cop-out on women's equality. Rather than addressing the underlying issues, you are treating the symptoms and calling them the cause. |

Contraceptives allow women not to get "domesticated" and be forced to stay at home and watch the children. Once women are allowed to get educated, get work, etc., They have the power in themselves to change the patriarchal society we live in.About keeping third world populations down: Ridiculous argument. The third world already has 4/5 of the world's population, and it's growing all the time. However, this means that smaller and smaller shares fall to each person at a time. Would it be easier to achieve higher living standards with two children to feed or with ten? Condoms also stop the spread of AIDS. The only alternative to Contraception is abstinance. This doesn't work for several reasons: (1) Like it or not, people enjoy sex and are not going to give it up easily. (2) The patriarchal society we live in means women have less to say in sexual matters. The Catholic Church must be made to see the facts. Jehovas Witnesses won't let their chilren be operated on. Should we allow this as well? |

Eh- I wouldn't call it vital for human development, but the Church's opposition of this clearly makes no sense. I can sort of understand protecting fetuses, but eggs? That routinely die other ways? Puh-leeze. |

In case ya'll haven't noticed, having a child no longer forces the woman to stay home. Women in the US routinely have to go to work in order to bring that vital second income into the household or they do it because they're independent and want to make their own money. At least childcare is tax deductible. I think women should stay home and raise the children and I think contraceptives are important. |
