Alright, I've said it before, but this time it seems as if the forums really are hitting rock bottom. I'd like to call for a temporary moratorium on all of the nonsensical threads that he been springing up lately, and ask people to focus on some serious discussion. Newcomers to this forum seem to be getting the idea that it is nothing but pointless crap. Unfortunately, they are more correct in this assessment every single day.

There are plenty of people still around here who I know are capable of some good discussions. I know there are a couple new people who want to take part in them, too. Start new threads. Resurrect old ones. Do whatever it takes to bring back the core of these forums, which has always (well, for a long time, anyway) been the varied and interesting discussions we've had. If we all work together, we can take a last stab at making this a place worth returning to.

Most of you know me, and know that I'll discuss a wide variety of topics. Religion and philosophy top the list, followed by American political issues (hopefully "big picture" issues) and an occasional science or technology discussion, as well as whatever else catches my eye. There are a few threads currently active that I'm posting in, but I'd like to see more. That can't happen unless the rest of you join in.

Octopus, somehow in this hot summer weather I don't feel like being serious. Besides, there are too many things for me to celebrate - graduation, birthday etc., so I'm a bit lightheaded these days. Don't expect too much serious stuff from me.

Ill have to agree with Saras on this one (?!), its summer and I for one are having a hard time concentrating on such mundane issues as cleaning the apartment, doing the dishes, etc, etc. Forgive me for not participating in various esoteric discussions on this forum. However I enjoyed the discussion in the socialism threads, and I would have posted there if I had come up with something worthy the discussion. I felt however that I couldnt match the eloquence that was displayed in the discussion (excuses, excuses ). And besides, I have my hands full planning our (the partys) annual summer camp "Summer, sun and socialism".

Its not me posting the crap this time is it Oct?

I have improved (honest).
But the other guys have a point.
Serious is good, but not all the time.

"Serious is good, but not all the time."

There is virtually nothing serious here any more. If you guys want the forums to be this way, then I guess there's nothing I can do about it. Oh well. For a time these forums were fun, but there's less and less reason to be here.

Octopus, take a vacation. Remember the last time you "left for good" and I and tOFfGI teased you back . Good threads are found when you open the forums after 10 days away from the computer.

Temporary insanity helps maintain long term sanity.

You talking to me?

forums were fun

With all due respect (and yes, I do respect your thoughts and opinions Octopus) fun is the operative word here and different people have different definitions of fun. I have deal with a lot of serious crap at work and I do enjoy the humor on this forum. It provides a needed break. I also enjoy some of the serious threads too, but they are sometimes more work to participate in. For example I have been posting to your Machine Intelligence thread, but dont really have the time to do it justice. I think that there is room for both serious and humorous threads here. Enjoy the threads you like and ignore the ones you dont.

"Enjoy the threads you like and ignore the ones you dont."

The problem is that there are fewer and fewer threads that I like and more and more and more threads that are just pointless. My idea of fun is the mental gymnastics that go on in a really stimulating discussion. I never get a chance to discuss philosophy, etc., anywhere in my day to day life, and it was something I really enjoyed here. I'm not saying forget about all the nonsense forever, I'm saying take a break for a few days and try to infuse some life back into the good threads.

"Octopus, take a vacation. Remember the last time you "left for good" and I and tOFfGI teased you back"

Not to be too self-absorbed, but if I left, then virtually nobody would be posting in the threads that I consider "good".

You're already there, dude!

Seriously, the same could have been said about the last time. There is demand for smart discussion, and they would not die out because you left. There would be LESS of them, of course, and after seeing a couple of posts worth arguing against, you'd show up with guns blazing. Believe me, I've seen it before.

Hmph. For one of the bigger nonsense debaters in the past, I'm afraid I have to agree with Octopus this time. It's not that we need a moratorium on nonsense, it's that we need a mix back again.

And I don't know what it is, but the nonsense I usually enjoyed, like the I Clubs, Random & Non-Random, etc., isn't around anymore it seems.

Let's see if we can't get some higher quality "serious" topics as well as higher quality nonsense as well, if that's not an oxymoron.

The Serious Threads for Octopus's Politically Intelligent Thoughts (STOPIT)

We seem to be rehashing the same topics over and over again. That's why the serious discussion has gone away. Come on- How many Socialism vs. Capitalism threads have we seen?

If you have an unexplored topic that's never been seen before (There are lots), please post it under the heading STOPIT: Whatever. We'll see what we can do to liven up this place again.
