Never played it, only the demo. It was really fun, but I'm always cautious with FPS games (Sin...)

First Person Shooters
I have heard really great stuff about this game. MikeH has a great recommendation around here somewhere.

It's the only fps where the AI has a half decent intelligence. Meaning they don't just mindlessly charge and shoot. The commandos work in tandem, and some of their tactics are frightening. If say you are waiting for them to come around corner, one might charge around and rush down the hall, and when you turn to shoot at him, the one you don't know about will come around the corner and shoot you in the back. And don't sit in a room and snipe them either. They'll just toss in grenades.

Buy it. Great game, excellent levels. But, like any FPS, you really need a P2 and a good 3d card. Otherwise buy a strategy game.

It is a very good game.

The Artificial intelligence is really nice. And it actually has an interesting story (unlike most fps that have no story line at all).

I was also impressed by the large, interesting levels. And also it was one of the only games that made me "jump" in my seat while playing, from getting a scare.

Buy it.

This is the best FPS ever, even with Quake 3 coming up. It has a great storyline and a full set of interesting weapons and intelligent opponents. Quake 3 has no story, other than a bot training camp. Great multiplayer, but if you want something to play by yourself, get Half-life.

Hail,

I haven't played the full game (wimpy computer right now), but I have played through the demo and played bits on a friend's machine. It certainly does stand out from the average FPS, and seems like a good buy if you've got the hardware for it.
However, I have to disagree with Shining1. The best FPS ever was System Shock. It had a great storyline, and did things long before other FPSers did, some of which they still don't. And System Shock 2 is coming out this year

How can they call it tourist season when we're not allowed to shoot them?

Go and buy it now and curse the time you've spent not having it!

I love that game soooo much, about 95% of my computer time at the moment is spent on Half Life Deathmatch, I am going to have a big phone bill. The one player game is so tense that sometimes it makes you jump out of your skin. The AI is great for a FPS the levels are extremely well designed and varied. They are also things you can relate to. The characters talk to you and interact which is really cool. Especially at the beginning when you don't know what's going on. PLus it's got a great story line which you find out about as you go along.

"The best FPS ever was System Shock"
System Shock was not quite a FPS, more a FPRPG/S/A (First-Person Role-Playing Game/Shooter/Adventure).
However, Half-Life is great. Buy it.

Half-Life Single Player is far too Jumping Oriented (Like a 1980's bad platform game) to be any fun at all. Multiplayer is a bit weird as well. I'd stick to Quake2, buying Half-Life for one single reason: TFC.

Team Fortress Classic is THE best add-on of all time. Enhances your Half-ife Experience no end, providing you've got a decent internet connection. If not, and of you want to keep your phone bill low, stick to Quake2.

Hald-life is a good game. Just a bit wierd at the end. Especially having to kill the large, floating, stay puft man at the end.

A lot of the end of the game sucked ass, (Xen really blew.), but on the whole it was the best single player FPS I've ever seen. Also, I played it through on a P166 with no accellerator in 640X480 with no trouble. It got choppy during the opening sequence, but was okay for the rest of it. (Multiplayer was a different story.)

Am I the only one who thinks houndeyes are cute? BREEEE! ::whoom::
