... I got a wild hair crosswise and decided to see if we could cobble together a different type of roleplaying than what we see on these forums currently? Something that's more character-driven than faction-driven? The roleplaying games I have enjoyed the most are those in which I have an individual character, who changes and develops throughout the story. I see a lot of potential for such a thing, played with the world of Chiron as a backdrop. Anyone interested?

For a combination of faction-based and character-based SMAC roleplay, we'd have to probably be doing some sort of realtime interaction, first of all. Not just a forum; there's not enough flow and interplay for real characterization. I'm of the opinion that IRC would be the most likely choice for such a thing. Also, we'd have to set down some groundrules to avoid the Cowboys and Indians Syndrome: "Bang! You're dead!" "No I'm not! You missed!" "Did not!" "Did TOO! Neener-neener!" Anyone have any input? I'll get it off the ground and run it if I can generate the interest. One caveat, though... being primarily a horror writer, my scenarios can be graphic. I'd prefer this be an adults-only game, so no one gets into trouble. |

You see what happens? I, personally, am for something on the order of a group of people in a small spaceship, trapped on the other side of the galaxy, trying to get home. Though, admittedly, Chiron would make for some extremely interesting adventures.... |

I'll read the Civil War stuff, but I really am after setting up something related specifically to the background world in SMAC. It would draw on what has been written in the story, although people need not play the faction leaders as set out in there. For instance, Lady Deirdre may have gotten eaten by mindworms while prancing nekkid through the fungus, and been replaced by a woman named... say... Hyaena... (g) |

DesertHyaena, It sounds to me like you are describing what has been taking place in the "SMAC Fiction" forum. If you haven't already, check the AFC (Alternative Future Chronicles) and CPUB (Chronicles of Pre-Unity and Beyond). Be sure to set the "Show topics from the last X days" to 60 or 100 days to get the range of things posted there. |

That looks more like a 'shared story' to me, not a realtime RPing scenario. Don't get me wrong, that's great stuff; I just want to do something that requires more dynamic interaction. |

Okay, walrus, so it's a Sci-Fi standard plot. I got two words for you: Big Deal!!! The reason it's a standard plot is that it can work so well with different sets of starting conditions.Spider |

Try something new, don't copy think of an idea yourself. Also, make sure it doesnt escalate, so that people grow and grow. (even a japanese one, they might try geting to America!) Also, define territories and start people with equal numbers of armies. |

I'm planning on having the focus be actually on the players and their conflicts and other interaction. This is mainly a character-driven scenario that's intended to explore the mechanics of a group of people who have each become a 'little tin god' in their own territory, but who have wildly-differing goals and ideologies. As for 'trying to get back'... uh-uh. Earth go BOOM; there IS no 'back'. This is the actual human interaction behind the original precept of the game itself, brought across into the realm of roleplaying. Not a shared story (though they ROCK!!), not a simulation. So who wants to try my idea on for size? I reserve the Gaians (or something close to them); any other takers? |

I have no problem with the idea of allowing such things as magic into the game, because I happen to be Wiccan and view ritual and magick (spelled that way to differentiate it from mere prestidigitation) as sciences in and of themselves. However... I do want to keep the original spirit and intent of SMAC as close to intact as I can. This means that the factions should stay relatively close to what we actually see when we play the game. You can call yourselves anything you like, but for it to work, you have to have several elements. The first of these is a faction that logically could have been aboard the Unity. Remember, this game is based on what has actually gone on in the setup of SMAC. For instance, the Shu Dynasty that Picker speaks of could have originated aboard Yang's shuttle, but may have split off from him when it was realized that their anachronistic views would not be tolerated. Also, you MUST have a faction leader with a believable character background, because that's who the game will focus on. This can be anything from one of the SMAC Seven to someone you've created yourself. However, if you DO play one of the original faction leaders, please keep your roleplaying consistant with what we know of that character. (Sheng-ji Yang would NOT say anything like "Du-u-ude, that Democracy crap you do is, like, uncool, man!") Last thing I'll bring up here, and this may get some people mad. My only other rule for this so far is 'Thou Shalt Not Suck'. This means you actually have to be able to come up with good, readable, believable background. It also means no supercharacters/superfactions, poorly thought-out tech advances, 'godmoding', or taking liberties with someone else's character or faction without their permission. We've probably all had experiences in roleplaying where we were annoyed by the actions of another player; the Golden Rule applies here. I'll be coming up with my own writeup for my faction and character at some point, so people can read over it and have an idea of what this will look like. I'll post it in the Factions thread, but that is not where the bulk of gameplay will take place. As I mentioned previously, we need to find something that has a realtime interface, like perhaps ICQ, a Java chat of some sort, or IRC. |

OK here we go,The descendent of the great Liu Bei, the last Han Emperor, Liu Shang, has remembered his forefather, and how he became a great man. The views of Sheng-Ji Yang on how to be a great leader, conflicted with his own, and he and those who followed left Yang's "camp" to start their own great nation. |

Okay, here's how I'm going to start this. The basics of my faction will be posted here, like Picker just did. The 'game mechanics' stuff will be posted in Factions, and the actual story of my character and faction will go into SMAC Fiction. The Centauri Witch faction split away from the Gaian faction due to a disagreement with Lady Deirdre Skye. The Witches, led by a mysterious woman called The Hyaena, do not agree with the pacifistic stance of the Gaians, and have a fundamentalist belief system. It is also believed that they have taken with them genetic samples of many animals native to Earth, and that they may have begun breeding these under controlled circumstances. |

When Zakharov's pod landed, a minority fragment left to set up a more ethical system, but, true to human nature, they soon became as corrupt as the original University, and the leader, a mysterious figure known only as "Spider" or "Reclusa", has established his policy of research and expansion to the exclusion of all else. It is rumored that he merely awaits a few critical technologies to unleash his biological terrors. |
