Um... like 'Hi' n' stuff! I'm Samantha, I'm new to the board and also to SMAC in general... I play weird Gaian-esque factions with alien names, generally, and am very interested in the roleplaying stuff that's going on. If you really HAVE to know anything else about me, ask... I might not answer your question but I'll at least say something entertaining...

Why is your name spelt wrong?

Actually, the name isn't spelled incorrectly; 'hyaena' is an alternate spelling for the word. I spell it that way because I like beauty even in written words, and I think the old form of the word looks nicer.

As for what I'm doing later... it could be too damn weird for you to cope with. Are you absolutely sure you want to ASK a GothGrrl what she's doing?!

Aha! Now "GothGrrl" is a typo.
:p
BTW, you should add that to the list of "ae" words.

Actually... do a web search using 'GothGrrl' as a search criterion. You'll be shocked at the number of hits you get. There are punk-grrls, straightedge-grrls and other underground loud/weird/pissed-off types that use that spelling!

DesertHyaena,
Welcome to this forum. Don't worry about being new to SMAC, this is, after all, the Non-SMAC related forum.
How long have you been lurking?
Do you prefer to be referred to by our name or nick?
JohnIII isn't being unfriendly. He's just being English.
Or as our Australians friends would say, "He's just being a whingeypommeybastard." :-)

John III just hates Goths and Gaians (comes from being English ), and will stop referring to himself in the third-person.

You're kidding... is it really that unusual to see a female gamer?

ANYway... what is the basic protocol for those who wish to RP? Is there a chat room or is it all done in context of a multiplayer game? (Boy... I *am* newbitic!)

Hello, and welcome to these forums. Don't mind jsorense, he's been too long in Venom's dumpster looking for his desk.
For sample RPing, check the Conquest of Sol thread in the Factions forum. Some of the stuff is just posted there without any background, others are first talked about over ICQ.
And yes, female gamers are uncommon. Female forumers are even rarer. The last one I remember was Maya, but she ain't in here anymore.

Welcome DesertHyaena. Yeah, all these guys are apparently getting raging hormones/pheromones whatever because "omigosh, there's a grrrrl here!" and they're thinking of ways to lure you into a chat room or getting some other personal information....unless they're like me who just ended a somewhat disturbing relationship...

As for Goth stuff, it's kind of creepy to me, but maybe it's because I'm not to familiar with all the little nuances (ignorance is not bliss, I guess)

Anyhow, enjoy your stay here. This forum is good to discuss anything about.

News travels fast, Stasis Archon...

We're like a bunch of filthy sailors that just got back from a two-year circumnavigation of the earth or something, and the first thing we do is head to a bordello.

Wait a minute... that's not the example I was thinking of. But it also kind of gets the point across.

DesertHyaena,
Role-playing and the SMAC forums.
This is a complicated topic. You can find role-players in just about every forum here accept "Science and Technology."
The most active scenarios are in the "The Factions" forum as Jay mentioned.
There are a couple of long standing stories based on the SMAC details in the "SMAC Fiction" forum: the AFC (Alternative Future Chronicles) and CPUB (Chronicles of Pre-Unity and Beyond.) Both of these stories have lost writers recently and have gone moribund.
Even "The Game" forum will have a creative thread from time to time.
Within the "Non SMAC Related" forum there are also a number of role playing threads of different types. Look for anything with I-Club in the title. The IIIS is always looking for qualified personnel. Threads started by Victor Galis, SnowFire, Dark Nexus, or Fjorxc the Maniac may also have RP components.
I hope that helps.
BTW, don't listen to Jay. I haven't been in a dumpster for weeks. Honest.

Well... what's the feeling on someone starting an entirely new storyline? And am I correct in thinking the bulk of the roleplaying is done actually in these forums? I'm more used to a chat-based RP situation.
jsorense posted 06-09-99 07:51 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for jsorense  Click Here to Email jsorense
DesertHyaena,
I would suggest that you go ahead and start your own thread. My only advice is to state up front any settings, rules or parameters you want loosely adhered to.
Sometimes you will see parallel RP threads. One thread carries the story and the second thread hosts the background discussions of the participants.

Don't forget Brenda. We now have had a grand total of 3 women who stuck around for more than a few posts.

Welcome, Desert Hyaena. You;ve missed, oh, 35 I Clubs, but that's no big deal. You'll learn plenty of forum history in the IIIS hospitatlity room.

In any case, we gotcha topics here. Topics, topics, all lined up ready to be posted in.

In a recent magazine (well recent enough to still be in a friends bathroom) Reading, where I live, was described as the Goth (Goff) capital of England. I certainly do see a healthy blend of new Maralyn Mansun "this is what we can get away with at school" and older "I can make this hair look neat enough to go to work" as well as the hard core who work in piercing shops and sell pewter spider broaches on market stalls.

I'll always remember the immortal words of my German exchange partner, I want to go to London and see the people with the funny hair.

What the hell am I talking about? Ah yes, the work I have got to do is boring so I'm rambling here instead.

Role-play away! We love it in this forum.

Desert, look in the Civil War: 2023 thread, and read the first post about the story and the rules, then go into the Civil War: 2023, on the brink of war thread, and read the third post that has all the empires to date in it. Then you can claim some unclaimed territory. We are always looking for more.
