I saw the movie.
After reading some of the posts here as well as being subjected to the publicity campaign for what seems like an eternity now (Pizza Hut, KFC, every damn place is SWing its ass off) I went into the movie with very high expectations.

It was a good movie. But not extraordinary.
I don't see the problem with Jar Jar either. The only problem is that I couldnt understand what he was saying half the time.
"Meser walking here now. Youser are ..."

Anyway, I thought the movie had an unfinished and 'rushed out the door' kinda feel to it.
More stuff:
1) Darth Maul had about 2 lines of script and he was one of the most interesting characters. Wasted opportunity.

2) The 'Race' scene was a bit boring by the third lap.

3) Jabba the Hut is in the movie for 3 seconds. He is so cool. Another wasted opportunity.

4) Not enough war scenes. There is one full minute of good war scenes (which I love)

5) The droids. How crap are they? Droids = easy way to make the most of computer animations 'cut n pasted' a million times.

6) Anakin. I dont think I will ever look at Darth Vader the same again. This kid is way more annoying than Jar Jar. Someone shoot him. Or give him steroids so he grows up already.

Thats all I can think of now. I wasn't as impressed by the movie as much as I thought I would be. Lets hope 2 and 3 are better. Although if Lucas's 'episode 2 will be a love story' comments are anything to go on then YAWN.

Won't any movie deliver on it's potential? I hope LOTR does.
PLEASE....

I loved 4-6, but 1 sucked like hell.

Yes, the Matrix has to be one of the best movies of recent times. Beats the hell out of SW.

But I really don't want to discourage anyone from seeing SW. It is a solid movie so long as you don't get your expectations built up too much by all the hype.

This episode also has a different feel to it from the previous three. This one is almost on the verge of being a comedy in some parts. The others were a Jedi story with humour here and there. This is a slapstick easygoing film with a few serious fighting scenes peppered in.

I was just waiting for somebody to say that.

I'll agree there were many wasted oppurtunities, especially with Darth Maul. Unless he doesn't actually die and comes back as a half robotic Darth Maul, something like an early Vader.

I've seen this movie twice now, and I still find it hard to form a definite opinion on it. It certainly does not leave you with the same type of closure or entertainment that most movies do... but it isn't supposed to. I didn't go in expecting any landmark performances or elegant scripting. I wanted to be awed by special effects while being delivered an opening to what should be 3 incredible movies, and I think that's exactly what I got. I think Roger Ebert put it best when he explained that those looking for a space opera style story with more intricate character relationships should look to Star Trek, which though good doesn't compare to the Star Wars atmosphere.

More importantly, however, as mentioned, Natalie Portman was hot. So this movie has great special effects + sound, and a really good looking girl. What more could you expect from an action movie?

Well when I go to the movies I don't want to be told "this is an introduction. to be continued in 2002" or whenever Episode 2 will be done.
I want a whole movie. SW1 is well made but too short for this sort of movie (2hrs)
Anyone know how long the other episodes were?
