I belive you, Ill remove this piece of sh*t as soon as Ive written this message. With my luck it will probably crash the hard drive and everything in it, like IE 4 did when I uninstalled it a few months ago Bishop Die Bill Gates, die ! |

What are the alternatives to Internet Exploder and Netcrap? Just curious. |

So it looks like what it is?As for alternatives, the big one is Opera, from a Scandanavian company, too, IIRC. |

IE5 is a lot better than netscape. If you visit a webpage a lot of times, it will automatically load all the stuff that was there before making at really fast to surf the web. Also, on my comp it takes literally 30 seconds for all the netscape apps to load, it only takes 5 seconds for IE5. Which versiondid you d/l, international or US? |

TheHelperMonkey: Both do that. It's called a cache(or in MS-speak, Temporary Internet Files).Personally, I find Netscape _much_ more stable, particularly from a tech support standpoint. Sheesh, the problems I have people call up with using IE. Stuff I never hear from Netscape users. |

For those of you that say IE loads MUCH faster than netscape consider this.IE(4/5) is already running at start-up. So just draw the window and your set. |

IE5 has a few annoying habits and doesn't look as good as Navigator, but it is much faster than either IE4 or Navigator. I even uninstalled Netscape after a few days with IE5. I miss the personal toolbar, but the whole Communicator package just sucked up too much HD space (I had to install Thief). The next Navigator version will probably rock though. |

IE5 has big stability problems in Win98 compared with IE4 - I find many more instances of freezes and hangs and GPF in explorer.exe and user.exe, even when doing next to nothing. And I've been doing serious app development, etc. far longer than microstupid. (23 years) It is faster when it runs, but definitely less reliable. |

IE5 might look crap, but it certainly grows on you. The ability to download all the files related to a page, whole nets, the new auto-complete feature, the speed, I like it. |

Hugo - once I had all the updates to IE4, it literally never crashed on any of the three systems I have. IE5 crashes or hangs on me at least 2 times a day, and it's the only app I currently have any problems with. No doubt over time, the update patches will trickle out, but I'm still glad it's not something anyone ahs to actually pay for - the trouble with the browser wars is that with nothing but giveaway product, there is no market incentive to really radically improve and extend the browser. |

Ok. I might have had a different version of IE4, but I'm sure it crashed on me at least twice a day. IE5 hangs sometimes, which IE4 never did, but it's so rare it is negligable. |

Its Murphys law alright, when I started my computer this morning it said something like "theres a missing file in the windows subcatalogue /iosubsys can not load W95". Sure as hell I had to reinstall W95 Arrrggghhh !! And now I cant even uninstall IE5, thrice damned be Microsoft ! AAArrrrggghh x2, now Ill have to format the entire HD again damn, damn, damn. Bishop more than a little agitated PS TheHelperMonkey, I use the Swedish version. |

I have IE 5 and Netscape 4.6 and they both have their problems but I use IE for day to day stuff. It's more user freindly than Netscape and has more features. Plus I had horrible trouble with Netscape 4.5 not shutting down all it's threads when you ran multiple windows. Seems to be fixed in 4.6 as far as I can tell.I've got no pro-Microsoft feeling but in this case they seem to have a better product. IMHO |

Just wait for the next Netscape with the Gecko engine. They say it will be very small, stable and fast. Not like the big suckers web browsers are today. |

I have fewer crashs with 5 than I did with 4, but with 5 the menus go haywire frequently (strange colors, no bookmark names) and multiple windowing is kind of screwy. And taking out the Preview Print menu item puzzles me. But almost everything else works better and faster than 4. |

I used to use Netscape exclusively but now I'm not so sure. It seems like Netscape will have to work hard to catch up with IE, especially when it comes to CSS. And rumour has it that NN5 won't be much different to NN4 in terms of reading pages with CSS.It's annoying when you design a beautifully rendered webpage using CSS only to find out that it won't look nearly as beautiful in Netscape. |

Amazing. I used IE5 beta for quite a long time. Never had any crashes. I've been using IE5 final, never had any crashes. I was forced to use Netscape at work, and it's garbage. It lacks many good features that IE5 has. Go Internet Explorer. |

I've never had any crashes with ie5 either nor with the beta version. One off the problems with the beta version was that when I tried to write a long message for instance at this forum the hole page scrolled down and after a while and I couldn't see what I was typing anymore. This have luckely been fixed in the final version though.. Ambro2000/B>

Bishop, Sorry to hear about your problems with IE5. Perhaps I can be of assistance. You problems with speed and graphics are actually hardware related; For best performance you system should be equipped with the Static Computer RAM Enhanced Web Engine Definition or SCREWED. So, if you are having performance problems with IE5, Microsoft recommends that you go get SCREWED. If your system is already SCREWED, you need to upgrade to SCREWU2 for use with Netscape Navigator. If you are having problems using IE5, you need Special High Intensity Training or ****. So, if you do not understand how to use IE5, you have to take **** from Microsoft. Hope this helps...

I wonder, do people hate IE5 because of Bill or because it really sucks? I ain't trying to defend my boss, by any means, hell no. Hell, all I care about is my baby (a.k.a winnt) To add even more to irony, majority of the people in our division use the "other" browser. Anyway, have you guys seen NeoPlanet, looks pretty good, works like crap though. |

I will admit that I have never had any problems with IE. My prior post was more of a joke than an actual comment on my feelings about Microsoft products in general. I use many products from Microsoft (Office, Visual Studio, Visual C++, Windows NT/95, Access, SQLServer etc.) and find that they generally work very well. Microsoft is a big target and it is fun to throw stones at them, but in reality I feel that they are doing a good job and their products are Ok. (Go ahead and flame away!) |

Microsofts products are very userfriendly. The thing about microsoft however is that they allow more bugs than any other software manufactor in the world. (well except many game manufactors ). They don't want to spend those extra millions to do that little extra boring bug test. AMbro2000

I dunno, maybe it's me, but when I'm forced to use IE I generally disable all the 'features'(such as "Search from Address Bar"; I hate that) I can. They mostly just get in my way.---- At work, we've repeatedly experienced crashes (on a number of machines) with IE 5 that have taken down the whole OS, even when "Lauch browser windows in a separate process" is enabled; we don't haver this problem with Netscape. |

A2K,Im not really convinced that Microsoft products actually have more bugs. I think you do hear a lot more about their bugs because of that big target thing and more people are using their products. I do use a lot of non-Microsoft products too, and I have seen some very annoying bugs in lots of tools. Bugs that have been in at least four point releases and are still not fixed! At least Microsoft will fix a bug when they know about it. They arent perfect, but they are not nearly as bad as many people lead you to believe.

It's not so much bugs for me; it's the interface. I don't like the dumbed down attempt at an interface for the LCD(Lowest Common Denominator not Liquid Crystal Display, to bring in another thread) that even fails at this. Strangely, my tech support job was easier before Windows 95 when a sizeable portion of our users were using MS-DOS. Why? Now 75+% of my calls involve teaching people how to use a mouse and where to find the "Start" button. This is much harder than telling people what to type and results in more repeat calls. |

Spoe, I was never that thrilled with the Win9x interface either. But everybody dumped on MS cause The Win3.1 UI sucks and the Mac UI was cool. IMHO The Win3.1/DOS UI was fine. One of the problems with Tech-Support is that the Win9x UI can be customized

IE wreaks havoc with the system, NN does not thats the way it is (on my computer at least). Ive never had problems with booting the system when Ive used NN, with IE its a different story alltogether (system files go missing, requesting existing .sys-files while booting, etc. etc.)IE is CRAP !! Actually they tested it to see which company had the most and least bugs in their work. NASA for some obvius reason won(don't want something messy happen while you're in space) and microsoft lost. Most people don't ever notice those bugs though.....I unfortunally don't have the URL anymore to the site were i got this information. it was being made for about a year ago. Ambro2000 |
