Everquest is an online only game, so therefore I can't afford to play it. Here in Norway we pay by the minute for a connection.Diablo: "Look! A skeleton! Click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click! And there, a lava guy! click, click, click, click, click, click!" So much fun! |

Damn its so dark I cant figure out what it is. *Click* *Click* *Click* Oh its dead it seems. Wow there is another one identical. *Click* Click* Oh my...I'm dead. *Titan opens his cdrom and flushes the Diablo cd in the drain* |

JohnIII, how is Everquest, I might play it but for two reasons I can't.... lack of finances, and my old K6 166/40Ram no 3d... well a S3 Virge, don't cut it. I'm looking forward to seeing how Asheron's Call ends up. It's atleast got a software mode for us old timers. I am curious, is there much you can do, besides killing monters and/or people, things such as UO have a nice economic system etc. ? Carny

Well, I was at first very reluctant to trying out Diablo, really preferring "relaxing" turn based games where I could take my time between mouse clicks. Then I saw the monsters and I got hooked. I simply had to know everything about them, HP, AC, Damage, To Hit%, Magic Immunities and Resistances etc. I began to make long lists about the monsters and soon everything else in the game: weapon speed, equipment price formulas, spell efficiencies and the list goes on. It's trivia like this that gets me going apparently. So I didn't like to admit it, but yes, I was addicted to a real time, mediaeval hack-and-slash game. Killing Diablo for the first time was an enormous rush, and after that it was about finding new and more difficult ways of wasting the Dark Lord. The next six or eight months I did little else but play Diablo. I tried some other games after that, but then some amateurs came out with new and harder "mods" of Diablo and I was hooked again. However, SMAC came along and "rescued" me Now I really, REALLY, can't wait for DiabloII to be released. They better finish it soon or I'll become ill. Until then, of course, it's SMAC. |

The point of the game is not to kill monsters, might I remind you. It's to find bosses, complete quests, and moving up levels. The fun is finding items to equip your characters and investing experience points to optimize your character. |
Valtyr
|
posted 05-16-99 06:31 PM ET
Don't get me started on the items. I know everything about the items! How do you get experience points? By killing monsters (and only that, I might add). How to you get the money to buy the equipment? Mostly by kiling monsters. What do you need the equipment for? Surviving monster attacks and killing them. How do you finish most of the (very few) quests? By killing monsters. What are these bosses? Monsters. Why do you want your character optimized? So you can kill the toughest monsters. When you've killed Diablo over 50 times, you get to notice certain patterns. so don't give me that "It's not about killing monsters" crap! I've heard it sooo many times before. |

I'll agree that it's very easy early on, and that Normal difficulty, especially Single Player, is a breeze. Perhaps it was that you tried, Frodo83? Try instead playing Multiplayer Hell/Hell difficulty alone! Being on dungeon level 16, as a Sorcerer, with the Fireball-casting, teleporting Advocates, immune to all your spells, except Stone Curse. You'll have to isolate one at a time, not easy when they teleport all over the place. Then you'll have to Stone Curse them several times each, while you use your sword, a sword that does little damage and is slow as hell to swing, you being a character that stinks at close combat. Or you're a Warrior on Hell/Hell lvl 15 surrounded by spell casting Soul Burners and Hell Spawn. You try to get in close for some swordplay, but they run away, all the while the others pound you with Blood Stars. Death is imminent the first time this happens to you. It's not enough to just click away in any old fashion. However, you'll learn your routines and the game is perhaps not that challenging later on, when you'll know what to do in every situation. The thing to do then is to make it more difficult for yourself, for example by refusing to purchase anything in town, not even health or mana potions, and only rely on what you find in the dungeons. It's not just to click, but how and when to click. |

Valtyr: Geee...when to click...despite not having played Diablo more than 5 minutes...I know some stuff about the game...Can you spell Staff of Apocalypse??? Sorry but with that you DON'T EVEN need to point and click...and pretty much everything dies... It makes the Bertha of TA look like a kid's toy...

Valtyr: I think you just described nearly every RPG ever made in that little rant. It's true though. Doesn't matter how nice a weapons special abilities are: How much extra light it gives, how much it increases your magic, etc, the only things you want are + %hit and + %damage. Same for armour. I gave up looking at items when I got the Grandfather and awesome armour (plate 47, +143%). Even diablo was no contest - took one healing potion to kill him. And this on my third game - it's not like I've mastered the thing... |

Uh, TOADS: Staves of Apocalypse only have 8-12 charges, and on Hell/Hell the monsters can take more than one Apocalypse. Who needs the annoyance of going up to town to recharge every two or three monsters, anyway. And it's not just picking up a Staff of Apocalypse either, you'll have to find it or get the money to buy it first and even then the witch may not have it. The clicking thing was a joke as you may well have seen, not a good one, but still. And no, if you only have played for 5 minutes you know very little about playing Hell/Hell. That's like a newbie SMAC player who has played half a game on Citizen trying to tell a Transcend Ironman how the game is. (No other comparisons intended.)Shining1: You found the Grandfather, and only on your third time too. Lucky you. Which difficulty level are you playing? Diablo isn't the most challenging or difficult game in the world, but for some reason or another it still has me hooked. Any suggestions why? |

You can't run whilst fighting in Diablo. The left mouse button is used for movement as well as fighting. If you target the ground, you walk, if you target a monster, you fight.

But then Diablo isn't a true RPG. It's more like an action/adventure/RPG hybrid, with the emphasis on action. Do you know how many core RPGers who would strangle you for calling Diablo an RPG? DiabloII is said to incorporate more RPG elements, though. And it's certainly going to diversify the characters more, with not a single skill/spell in common. |

Well, never bothered with an MMPORPG, so no, I don't play Everquest. Sorry. However I am a hardcore RPGer from way back in Ultima III /Wizardry I / Might and Magic I days. I did play Diablo, and I did like it. I shudder a bit when I hear it called an RPG, though in reality, it does include a fair few of the common CRPG traits. It is just that the interface is very dumbed down. All in all a very fun game, though I don't claim to know it near as well as Valtyr, and I for one can't wait for Diablo II. Oh, and I am work, so I can't really roll dice. Using my real cat's name I do like: "The year is best forgotten.
