posted 09-13-99 03:55 PM ET Hi there. I have Win98 and can't get the sound to work here on SMAC. It stutters. Like when you hear "Carmen" Santiago's intro at the beginning (when she quotes the Spartan Battle Manual), she stutters. "Superior... superior training... training....". I have DirectX6.1 on my Win 98 (as does everyone with Win98) but it doesn't recognize it. I have run the diagnostics for the Win98 version and it says there is no problem but the SMAC diagnostics says there are files missing... What do I do? I have begun to get somewhat addicted to this game and it sux when I can't understand Ms. Santiago's or Ms. Skye's voice... PLEASE HELP.

What's you're sound card? I'd start by making sure that you've got the latest version of DirectX installed, which can be found at www.microsoft.com/directx.

Some soundcards are not well supported by DX. Run the program DXDiag.exe that is in the c:\program files\directx\setup folder. Look for comments under the drivers and directx pages.

I have the same stuttering sound problem on my IBM Thinkpad laptop which uses an Mwave sound DSP chip. DXDiag.exe runs all tests fine. A dozen or so recent games also play well using this sound setup.
Im guessing that the problem could be helped if Firaxis were to throw in a couple of switches to manipulate the sound buffer length/block size. I used the latest version of WinAmp (an MP3 player) to set the output from WaveOut to Directsound using WinAmps supplied directsound plug-in. I can recreate the stuttering problem in WinAmp by decreaseing the buffer length and sound block size using WinAmps output preferences dialog.
Firaxis, is it possible that tweaking up the sound buffer length might at least help SMACs stuttering on systems like mine?

The fact that it runs the tests fine is interesting, but not necessarily all that informative. DXDiag.exe uses pretty simple tests to check basic functionality. Check the driver and directx pages in that program and look for notes, exclamation points, and other comments it might have. Also, DirectX 7 recent was released at www.microsoft.com/directx and may include improved support for your hardware.
