I just recently got the game, and patch4.
Are the previuos patches required?

No, you must install patch 4.0 after original game and you'll be OK.
Enjoy it.
Please note: you will gain a lot of bug removed (but some are still here), some new feature and a starting/loading slowdown.
Yes, it become slower than original, pre-patch version, so don't start posting angry message
