Hi,

is anybody else having severe problems playing SMAC v 4.0 with a Riva TNT chipset based videocard??? My games crash after a minute or 2 with a stackdump in either kernel32.dll or terran.exe.

This is getting really annoying, I paid 50 bucks for a game I can't play.

And no it's not a heat problem

I have a Viper V550 AGP too, but no problems.

I it is not a driver or heat problem: Have you overclocked your system? If you dont have a BX Chipset, you cant overclock over 66 MHz. (AGP uses RAM, RAM is VERY bad for overclocking (need PC-100).

Nope, I haven't overclocked my PC (overclockinh a AMD k-233 furness isn't a good idea). I have a via apollo MVP3 chipset. System is running on a 66 mhz frontbus speed, so my memmory is also clocked at 66 mhz. And SMAC is the only game I'm having troubles with. All other games (Alien vs predator, Railroad tycoon 2, Settlers 3, Baldur's Gate) run perfectly.

Drivers R latest from Nvidia, I use direct-X 6.1. The game crashed within minutes even if I have just started my system after a few nights of sleep. So I'm at a loss.

O I forgot, The MVP3 chipset is a 100 MHZ chipset for AMD CPU's, so I don't need a BX chipset (in fact, with an AMD CPU I can't use them)

Thanx for the tips anyhow.

I can't remember if we talked about his already, but did you remove the case and put a fan blowing over the processor? AMD processors can have heat problems and this has consistently solved this identical problem in the past.

Occassionally TNT chipsets have trouble with the movie player in SMAC. If you're able to get past that without problems, it's most likely not causing random lockups.

Jeff,

we've talked about this earlier, is it really a heat problem. The game always crashes within 10 turns with a stack dump. Even when The computer has been turned off for 12 hours or more (temperature within the computer never rises above 37 degrees Celsius). But I'll try a larger fan (already replaced the fan on the CPU after your last tip).

Thanx anyway Jeff, help is much apreciated.

If this problem persists I'll just have to play an my dads PC
