Author Topic:   Please Help Fraxis! TERRAN.EXE blinks then shuts down

I've tried everything in the Help files and I've called the help number 4 times, I've also traded in the game CD for a new one 3 times! The same thing happens over and over, I install SMAC on typical, i try to start the program up and the screen blnks. that's all that happens. I have a win95 with enough memory and ram. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you haven't selected a monitor type, thus you can't use a resolution higher than 640x480. You need to be able to manually set your desktop resolution to either 800x600x256 (8bit) or 1024x768x256. If you can't, chances are your monitor is set to standard VGA. Refer to your documentation or manufacturer on how to set your monitor correctly.

I changed the resolution to both settings and I still get a black flash and TERRAN.exe shuts down.

Is the game crashing, or just returning to the desktop? Try downloading DX 6.1 from www.microsoft.com/directx and installing it. If that still doesn't work, run dxdiag.exe in the c:\program files\directx folder and look for problems in the notes sections.
