Try setting your hardware acceleration to 0. Right-click on my computer, select properties, then performance, then graphics. Set
the slider to 0.

I have
k6-233(not overclocked),
matrox mystique pci(4m),
64m (ram),
smac ver 3.0
and windows 98.
I'm usually playing on 1024*768 and 8bit color.
Whenever I played the smac,it always crashed(at first or 3~4 turns after).
(just down to main windows screen or I can read error message.)
error message is :

Make sure you've got plenty of defragged HD space on your c: drive and that windows is managing your swapfile size. Try some of the tweaks mentioned in the readme.txt as well, especially the oldvoxel one.
