I'm trying to find out why I keep having a problem with the game crashing all the time.

I've not been able to figure it out for certain, but it always seems to happen during/before a battle that involves an air unit (but not all air battles).

I am using the v3 patch, english version.
I'm running Win95 on a PII 233. I am
using a complete install onto my hard
drive to run the game.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Chances are you're running out of virtual memory. Defrag the c: drive (or wherever your swap file resides), free up a few hundred megs of space, and let windows manage your swapfile.

Nope, that's not it.
It's still crashing, and I have over 400MB of space on the swap drive.

I've tried the d3sd and eax changes, and it still crashes.

Also this did NOT start with the patch 3.0 version, I was getting crashes even before then. That's why I updated to the patch.

Any other suggestions anyone?

I occasionally have the same problem. To me it looks like the game crashes when one of my air units scrambles in order to protect a unit or city from air attack. The Windows error message is "An invalid instruction was performed by terran.exe" or something similar.

However, this does not happen every time. Almost always I manage to continue the game by loading the most recent auto save, replaying the last turn and now, mysteriously, the very same air attack is completed without the game crashing.

May be of no use, byt have you tried MemTurbo ? It sounds like a resource thing to me if it works ok the next time around.
