Topic: Ecological damage - PLANET rating.

I know this has been posted before, but there didn't seem to be a reply, so I ask again:Why can't I eliminate Ecological Damage completely??? According to the datalinks (and the hintbook) a PLANET rating of 3 reduces ecological damage completely. Now I experimented with this (custom factions etc.) and got it as high as 9, but the damage still remains. Could someone please tell me what's going on, or at least how to circumvent this (I really don't want 75% of my population being specialists just so that I don't get overrun by mindworms every turn!). I read in a post from Brian Reynolds (no, not Bryan or Brion ) that the maximum value used for eco damage calculation is 2. Not that it is documented anywhere in the help files... |

well u can't get rid of eco damage completely if u have a huge base... just build an empath chopper and make sure u have the dream twister... that way u can at least kill the worms all at once.. u have to kill the locust seperately Hopefully they will come out with something in the addon to completely prevent eco damage, until then... u have to put up with makin planet mad |

Thanks for the prompt replies.Message for FIRAXIS though: Would it be too much trouble to put the maximum PLANET rating used in the alpha.txt file??? That way we could choose whether we like to get rid of ecological damage completely or not. I mean there are enough parameters in there (like all those combat modifiers) which IMHO are much less useful. |

I suggest an ecoworker: A new specialist type that removes up to 10 ecodamage in one city (per specialist). You must research ecological enigneering before this specialist becomes available. LD |

Thue WHERE IS THE POST FROM BRIAN REYNOLDS ON ECODAMAGE CALCULATION!!! I would really like to read it. Also, some clarification please. This maximum value of 2 for ecodamage; is this referring to the PLANET rating portion of the equation. Thus, the maximum allowable PLANET rating in the equation is 2 (even if your PLANET rating 3 or better). Please reply! I have been after the answer to this question for almost a month. PhysicsMan |

Yes, I am referring to the PLANET rating in the equation. Yes, that means that anything above 2 is not used in the equation.I found the post somewhere in the alt.games.firaxis.alpha-centauri newsgroup, but I don't remember where. Guess you will have to look around If you have wondered for a month you should have posted on these forums before |

IMO the +2 max planet rating for eco-damage is not right for the sake of balancing... I mean the Gaians (already a weak faction) are supposed to favor the green economics, so I think under green economics they should be better than other factions in reducing eco-damage. I do see that it would be too easy if eco-damage could be completely eliminated by a +3 planet rating. How about counting a +3 rating as 2.5 in the equation (so eco-damage is further halved)? I'd further suggest counting a +4 rating as 2.67, and a +5 rating as 3 (so a +5 rating would eliminate eco-damage completely). |

I completely agree with VictorK, considering that the Gaians are the only faction that can achieve a PLANET rating of 5, this would make sense.Another thing you could consider to aleviate the pain of terraforming is to add some new techs into alpha.txt which increase the nutrient, mineral or energy output in fungus. These tech should be quite late in the tree (otherwise it become very unbalanced) and have no other advantages. This way you can at least 'use' the fungus that pops up and together with the empath chopper trick reduce the hassle to an acceptable level. |

By the way has someone else noticed that the ecology damage sometimes drops without any reason after a fungus explosion??? Is this a feature or a bug? It seems random though, and it does not only happen at the base the fungus explosion was. |

Sanjuro,It is a feature. It is Planet restoring balance. JAMiAM
